Regression line should be independent of all other points, which is not likely to occur if several

measurement are made for the same person, and each is considered as a separate date point in
fitting a regression line

11.10 MULTIPLE LOGISTIC REGRESSION

In the previous section of this chapter we discussed methods for realating one or more
independent variables to a normally distributed outcome variable. In many instances we are
interested in performing similar analyses in which the outcome variable follows a binomial
rather than a normal distribution.
Example 11.34
Infectious disease chlamydia trachomatis is a microorganism that has been established as an
important cause of nongonococcal urethritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and other infectious
diseases. A study of risk factors for chalamydia trachomantis was conducted in a population of
431 female college students [5]. Since multple risk factors may be involved, we must
simultaneously control for several risk factors in our analyis of variables associated with
chalamydia trachomatis.
We might consider a model of the form
=+

+ +

However, since the right-hand side off (11.21) could be less than 0 or greater than I for certain
values of x1, , , ,xk., we could obtain predicted probabolotoes that are either less than 0 or greater
than 1, which is impossible. Instead, we use the logit (logistic) transformation of p as the
dependent variable.
The logit transformation l (p) is defined as
= [ /(1 p)]
Note that unlike p, the logit tranformation can take on any value from +
Example 11.35
Compute logit (0.1), logit (0,95)
solution
We have that

(0,1/0,9)= ln ( 1/9)=2.20
l ( 0,1 )=ln

( 19 ) = 2,94
(
)
l 0,95 =ln ( 0.95/ 0.05)=ln
If we model l(p) as a linear function of the independent variables x 1xk, then we obtain
the following multiple logistic regression model :
MULTPLE LOGISTIC REGRESSION MODEL
If x1xk are a collection of independent variables and y is a binomial outcome variable with
probability of success = p, then the multiple logistic regression model given by
