Unit of Instruction Outline

Kindergarten: Countries Unit

1. Unit Goals
This unit will focus on Countries, Continents and different Cultures from around the
world. This unit will fit in towards the end of the school year and will continue to build
upon the students vocabulary and English fluency. After the completion of this unit the
students will be able to:
Name the Continents and Countries learned in this unit.
Match words to each continent and country.
Separate Countries into each Continent.
Use the English learned in a Role-Play situation.
Verbally Identify information about each Country.

2. Ways to relate goals to curriculum


My privately owned International Kindergarten follows a theme based curriculum to
teach English as a second language to Japanese children. This Unit will provide new
vocabulary as well as new grammar and sentence structure.
Examples:
Where are / is you / he / she from?
I'm/he's / she's from Japan.
What language does he / she speak?
He / She speaks Spanish.
Is pasta Japanese food?
No, pasta is Italian food.
Lions are from Africa.
Japan is in Asia.

3. Characteristics of the students for whom this unit is


intended
This unit is intended for Japanese kindergarten students (ages 5-6) learning English
as a second language. These students range in their English abilities, but all have
moderate to excellent English listening and understanding skills.

4. Students level of performance and knowledge


Through the previous months of learning the students have acquired adequate
knowledge to complete this unit. The prerequisite skills needed for this unit are:

English listening and understanding


Basic phonics understanding
Basic reading skills
The ability to ask and answer basic questions in target language

5. Classroom layout and grouping of students


My K3 class consists of 13 students (7 girls, 6 boys). Boys and girls desks are mixed
and the desks are setup into 2 blocks (1 block of 7 desks and 1 block of 6 desks).
Most of the learning will take place at the students desk. There is adequate space
behind the desks for TPR activities as well as music/ dance time and craft or game
activities. Most of our activities in this unit will be whole group and individual activities.

6. Introductory procedures
To introduce this topic to my students I will use a map of the world, a globe and
Google Maps on my iPad to introduce the continents. I will use other tools such as
flash cards, worksheets and videos to introduce this topic. Once the students know the
continents I will spend the remainder of the unit teaching about the popular countries
in each continent and the different cultures they have.

7. Materials and media


The materials and media I will be using in this unit are:
A Smart T.V. On my classroom wall to show videos and Apps
iPad and Google Maps App
"The Continent Song" YouTube. YouTube. Web. 13 Sept. 2015.
Continent / Countries flash cards
Silhouette Continent / Countries matching game
labeling and matching countries worksheets
Bingo card game for memorizing countries
other educational videos
Homework worksheets

8. Visuals
The visuals I will create for this unit are:
1. Continent maps & flash cards
2. Continent/ Country Silhouette / word matching game to build reading skills
3. Country maps & flash cards
4. Country to Continent matching game
5. Countries traditional food flash cards
6. Large Country cards with flag images to place on the classroom walls

7. Flag to country matching game.


8. Bingo card game for learning continents and countries.

9. Assessment
Homework will be provided as well as weekly 1 to 1 practice and HW checks to
evaluate understanding.

10. Relate assessment instruments to the outcomes stated in


the goals
The HW and HW checks are a way to ensure the students understanding and to build
upon the students English ability.
