Topic: Solids, liquids & gases

Lesson # 3.4 in a series of

melting, freezing and boiling
lessons

Brief Lesson Description:

In this lesson will introduce to the students what is melting, boiling and freezing by using a different kind
of activities.
Performance Expectation(s):
2-PS1-4. Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can
be reversed and some cannot. [Clarification Statement: Examples of reversible changes could include
materials such as water and butter at different temperatures. Examples of irreversible changes could
include cooking an egg, freezing a plant leaf, and heating paper.]
Specific Learning Outcomes:
2-PS1-4 The students will able to identify melting, freezing and boiling.
Narrative / Background Information
Prior Student Knowledge:
The students already know what matter is and what the three state of matter is.
Science & Engineering
Practices:
Engaging in Argument
from Evidence
Engaging in argument from
evidence in K2 builds on prior
experiences and progresses to
comparing ideas and
representations about the natural
and designed world(s).
Construct an argument with
evidence to support a claim. (2PS1-4)
Connections to Nature of
Science
Science Models, Laws,
Mechanisms, and
Theories Explain
Natural Phenomena
Scientists search for cause and
effect relationships to explain
natural events. (2-PS1-4)

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Crosscutting Concepts:
PS1.B: Chemical
Cause and Effect
Events
have causes that generate
Reactions
Heating or cooling a substance
observable patterns. (2-PS1-4)
may cause changes that can be
observed. Sometimes these
changes are reversible, and
sometimes they are not. (2-PS1-4)

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:
May the students will confused about that heating affect thing to be melting and boiling and cooling affect
thing to be freezing.
LESSON PLAN 5-E Model
ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate Questions:
Starting the lesson with review with them the previous lesson and that will be in:
Bingo game ( whole class activity)
That on the board they will be have a matter bingo that for solids, liquids and gases. And I have a
card for who I am that have information about solids, liquids and gases. I will start with the first
group I will ask them one of the card and they will give me the answer then I will put the first card
on this word. We will going for each group until they will get one bingo.
EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions:
In the exploring I will lets students exploring some material to think and guess if it is heating, it will
melting, if it is heating , it will boiling and if it is cooling, it will freezing.
Exploring thing ( group activity)
In this activity we need a different material which are:
Material:
1. Chocolate.
2. Candle.
3. Water.
4. Juice.
5. Ice cream.
6. Butter.
Producer:
1. In the group the students will getting out the material and each students will get one
thing.
2. Each students will guess if it is will melting, boiling and freezing that will be in the
paper.
Discuss:
The teacher will discuss with the students about what they done in the group and will asking with
them some question like:
The chocolate in which state?
So, what will happen if I put the chocolate in the hot place?
And I will complete like this type of the question. And then will playing this flash for them:

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:
At the begging I will watch the students the video and they will discussion together about it:
First video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pxd56nzPl0
Second video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjvGQmZFM24

Explaining the lesson:

In the board I have three square and it is writing on it solid, liquid and gases and I have three word
which are melting, freezing and boiling. I will used a red color for heating and blue color for
cooling. And that will be:

Vocabulary:
Pour: move the liquid from one container to another.
Bubble: gas inside a thin skin, for example, a soap bubble.
ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:
In pairs the students will create the poster about changing matter.
Create poster ( pairs activity)
In this activity the students will need:
1. A4 paper.
2. Clue.
3. Three square paper that writing on it solid, liquid and gas.
4. Three rectangle paper that writing on it melting, freezing and boiling.
5. Red and blue color.
Then the students will working in pairs to create this poster.
After the students will finish they will present their work to the other students in the class.
EVALUATE:

What I learn? (individual activity)

In individual the students will writing what they learn in this lesson. That will need the small
paper and the pencil to writing down what they learn then will discussion together what they learn.
