UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


This lesson plan is a part of a unit plan on Government & Civics
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
1. Identify the current city/county Mayor, Governor, President and explain their roles in government
2. Select pictures that support your findings and why you chose them with a score of fair or excellent on the rubric
3. Write a brief story on what you would do if you were a specific politician for a day

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
TN Social Studies - 1.25 Identify the current city/county Mayor, governor, and president and explain
their roles in government

3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.

b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media

MATERIALS:

Handout (for the students to fill out who the current Mayor, Governor, President)

Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word Clip Art or Google Images
Highlighter
Computer

The computer will be used for the students to look up information on who the current Mayor, Governor and President are,
The websites each individually explain in detail what the role of the President, Mayor, and Governor are Microsoft Clip
Art or Google Images will be used to select pictures of the individuals who are in those respective offices

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


Students will understand the different roles in politics
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600
This lesson does not connect with previous lessons
We will refer to this lesson as we continue to explore government and civics .

I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this
particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


Introduction:
Begin having the students tell who they believe the current Mayor, Governor, & President are

Begin By having the students watch to Kids explain 3 levels of government video
Have student go to each individual site and learn about the roles of the Mayor, Governor & President

Procedures:

Teacher Before Computer Activity Handout assignment (10 Minutes)


1. After the students watch the video and visit the websites give the students the handout which is labeled
Politician for the day
2. Have the students decide for the purpose of the assignment if they would rather be President, Mayor, or
Governor for the day
3. Have the students write a short story on what they would do if they were that specific politician for the
day

1. Decide whether they would rather be President, Mayor, or Governor for the day

In the column labeled Politician type the 3 individuals who are in the positions of mayor governor

6. In the column labeled Roles List 3 roles of each of those individuals
7. Refer back to Google Images and search for pictures that display the politician and apply them in the
column

1. Arrange for the students to get into groups of 3-4
1. Put the students in different categories such as President, Mayor, and Governor
2. Have each student in each category will read off one role of the politicians position they were put in

Closure: The teacher calls on students to share which are their favorite politicians and to share their
stories. Teacher will collect the printed copies of the assignment and the stories that were written
