III. The Plan

Time
Parts

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher activities and
student activities
*Before handing out the packets, have students split into their assigned tribes
Motivation
and assign them specific jobs within their tribes. Write their name and tribe on the
(Opening/
Introduction/ top of the new packet.
Distribute new packets (containing job descriptions, note page, and rubric)
Engagement) Explain to students the various jobs allowing questions
Have students turn to the notes page to reveal what their jobs are
Go through each job note page and allow students to ask clarifying
questions
- *the additional notes section is for when you have answered all of your
research questions. This section is for any additional interesting facts you
learn about your tribe!
Have students turn to rubric
Explain the rubric to the class
- Use this as a guideline while you make your poster! Notice how many points
neatness is!
Development of the students use the iPads to research

- give these students QR codes of the chosen websites to scan using the QR
Reader iPad app
- *websites and QR codes are on a separate sheet
- I suggest assigned specific jobs to use the iPads the first day, and then
the remaining jobs use the iPads the second day (ex. Fashion Stylists
and Home and Village Specialists use iPads the first day. Natural
Resources Explorer and Beliefs and Traditions Expert use iPads the
second day)
The remaining of the students use the books selected from the library (or
wherever the teacher has collected them from)
- *books I used are listed under Resources tab
- BEFORE the lesson, go through the books and mark or write down where
useful information for each job is. Give students the opportunity to look for
information on their own, and tell them the pages with helpful information if
they need help
- Help students find the books for their tribes
- Allow students to spread out throughout the room
-*Allow for students TWO days for research (more days may be added if necessary)

Closure

-Once research is completed, give out paragraph sheets

Instruct students to take their notes and form a paragraph
- Discuss the parts of a paragraph: Topic sentences, detail sentences, closing
sentence
- I instructed my students to have at least four detail sentences (one for
each research question)
Students will write a rough draft, correct them, and then rewrite them
NEATLY!!!
- Help students with making corrections if needed
- Show students an example of a poster layout (they do NOT need to follow it exactly)
Students are to glue their paragraphs on a large poster
Draw a picture that represents your paragraph and create a flap
- show students how to create a flap with their pictures that hides their
paragraph until they flip it up
Groups practice their presentations
