needs.
You value the importance of planning as an integral part of teaching.
You selected and created learning experiences that were appropriate and relevant to
learners.

____ Inadequate

__x__ Emerging

_x__ Proficient

You knew your content. Your instructional procedures

engaged students in their learning and related to
their experiences (Thanksgiving, research writing).
You learning focus connected to specific student
needs; writing a research paper and the WKCE
writing prompt. The concept web was a practical
device that organized student thinking. Your
activities developed key academic language such as
introduction, main idea paragraphs and conclusion
(which was not reflected in your written plans). Your
written objective and assessment statements were a
bit general and needed to be more specific. As we
discussed, what other resources could have been used
to convey ideas more clearly and to enhance students
understanding and group participation?

Evidence (Candidate and Student)

You provided a very reassuring presence for students
and were very personable and encouraging in your
interactions with them. You promoted opportunities
for students to express their thoughts in writing and
elicited individual perspectives from the students
about their ideas. How could you have created more
whole group discussion and collaboration about their
writing? You positioned yourself at the table so you
could easily monitor their behavior and provide
individual support. You used praise to positively
reinforce students efforts. You redirected students
behavior when needed.

INSTRUCTION
Wisconsin Teaching Standards 4, 6, 7 (Communication, Coordination, Diagnosis, Integrative Interaction)

Teacher Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions Observed

You evaluated learning goals and considered alternative strategies and materials to meet
student needs.
You used some teaching and learning strategies to engage students in active learning
opportunities.
You presented concepts clearly and accurately.
You were a thoughtful and responsive listener.
You modeled appropriate communication strategies in conveying ideas and information
and in asking questions.
You communicated in ways that demonstrated sensitivity to cultural and gender
differences.
You connected instruction to students experiences.

Evidence (Candidate and Student)

You stated your learning goals at the beginning of your
lesson. You missed an opportunity here to make connections
to students previous learning about writing structure. The
concept web was an effective teaching strategy to organize
student thinking about the topic. Your questions stimulated
their thinking about main points to use for their written
paragraphs. Partner-sharing could have been used to
advantage here to promote more ideas and group discussion.
You had a logical sequence of steps for students to follow
in structuring their writing and developed important
academic language to label each step (Introduction, main
points, and conclusion). Visual charts or a portable white
board would have been useful in modeling these steps more
clearly for the whole group. A graphic organizer may have
been useful as a framework for structuring their
application of these procedures. You did a fine job of
facilitating their learning according to their individual
needs. It allowed students to work at their pace.

You adjusted and revised the lesson plan based on student needs.
