Collaborative Leadership Reflection

The main focus of this outcome involves having the knowledge of the responsibility we
have to patients as well as being accountable to our patients to provide safety and quality care.
The recommendations were what I expected because nursings focus has always been on our
patients and providing positive experiences and outcomes. To meet the goals of collaborative
leadership, a collective and individual effort is needed to decrease the risk of patient harm while
having the ability to work effectively with nursing and interdisciplinary teams to create an
atmosphere of respect, open communication and shared decision making to be able to provide
quality care to patients. This course has provided various learning opportunities that has helped
me meet this outcome including: most if not all of our online discussions that allow me to share
ideas and experiences with others about topics that are pertinent to understanding what
collaborative leadership is such as workplace civility, differences in managers and leaders,
resources that are valuable part of our employment as well as ethical and legal issues that apply
to nursing. Because I have a better understanding of this outcome, I believe that in the future
adding to what I envision my workplace to be now (a place where healing takes place) and also
seeing my workplace as a business and how the end result (positive outcomes) are a
collaborative effort by many that play a part in cost saving efforts and quality improvements and
safety initiatives that ultimately effect patient care outcomes in a positive manner. Examples of
Collaborative Leadership in this class that helped me reach this outcome was the a group project
where we collectively thought of a process improvement that impacted the quality of care ,our
group chose bedside reporting and through research noted that there was improvement in the
quality and safety of patient care through this quality improvement process. Another example of
collaborative leadership was through a discussion about a process that we thought of that we

could initiate change to improve care while having a cost savings for the organization. The first
document that I chose that was a reflection of this learning outcome was done in NURS 440, a
leadership strategy analysis paper this entailed taking a clinical process and initiating change
using quality management through interdisciplinary teams and evaluation of success thru patient
satisfaction scores to promote positive outcomes for patients. The second document that I choose
to represent this outcome is from a group project from NURS 340, as a group we were required
to create a group contract. This contract meets the Collaborative Leadership outcome by
showing the importance of collaborating with team members to obtain a common goal .This is
reflective of this outcome because it places emphasis on team building to promote positive
outcomes for all who are involved .This document is also a display of how planning is important
for moving projects forward in the future through collaborative leadership with a patients
centered focus.
