Lessons Learned: JOURNALING - Reflection on Purpose and Objectives

Throughout the co-op, lessons are learned and opportunities for improvement are discovered. As part
of a continuous improvement process, documenting lessons learned will help the progression of your
co-op and the project/s on which you are working.
Lessons Learned (questions to think about)

What worked well and/or didnt work well either for this project/co-op or for your project team?

What could or should be done differently?

What surprises did you discover and how did you manage them?

What co-op circumstances and/or challenges were not anticipated?

What co-op goals and/or objectives were attained this week (refer to your Final Co-op Plan)?

Note: The questions above can be used to guide your reflection and help you in identifying key learning points.
Your journal should be personalized to highlight your co-op experience. Other prompts are provided in
your syllabus.

What worked well and/or didnt work well either for this project/co-op or for your project
team?

After working on last assignment; which was Reflective Practices. Understanding how to incorporate
reflective practices into my research has become a must for me now and going forward. I have learned
that the use of reflective practice will generate more resources and effective changes in my action
research going forward. I can honestly say that my previous work lack reflective practices. I wished I
had implemented reflective practices, it would have allowed me to reevaluate the process of putting
together an effective assessment for the students. I am able to go back now and make some
corrections after being able to reflect and revaluate on the previous assignment. The ability to be able
to reflect on a particular project before using it important as a librarian. I am always looking for new
and innovative ideas and great ways to engage with students without repeating myself or using the
same format. In some cases, when professors invite me to their classes, I always encourage the
students and the professor to write an authentic reviews so I can understand how I can provide a
better experience next time.

What could or should be done differently?

In the first week of classes, I wished I had introduced Journaling to students, it would have been
better then, to be able to compare how their knowledge now to what level of information they
have gained in the last three weeks. I wish I had incorporated journal writing the first week of
classes, or asked student, What can you do different in the semester? Asking questions lead to
conversation. Asking students about their previous knowledge on the use of library and resources
and also testing their knowledge on information literacy skills. This week I asked the students to
start journaling once a week on the last day of school week, which is Thursday.

What surprises did you discover and how did you manage them?
Its still surprises me that the first place that students go to access information is Google and
professors are not encouraging students or pushing the library tools. I was also surprised at the
amount of students that have never write a journal before and this is there first time writing one.
They are only familiar with writing a personal journal and not a reflective one. I was able to
explained the advantages of writing a journal to them which is to create an awareness in
identifying different areas in which they need improvement on and areas they need to focus more
on I also explained that journal writing allows the need to reevaluate, areas such as effective
communication skills, research skills, creative skills and knowing when and how to seek help.

What co-op circumstances and/or challenges were not anticipated?

Lack of time management and cooperation between the chairs of every department, faculty
members and more collaboration among librarians. We all need to be able to work better together
to increase and provide more awareness of the use of library resource to students as one. We are in
week 4 and I have only receive two invite to teach information literacy class one online and one in
classroom. The numbers of invite are low, I sent out at least ten last week.

What co-op goals and/or objectives were attained this week (refer to your Final Co-op Plan)?
One of the things I struggle with is learning how to engage the students without feeling like am
repeating myself or using the same PPT presentation. In other to do so I have encourage the
students to write journals, this journal will focus on what they have learned in the past three
weeks, what need to focus on and the changes they need to make going forward. I have also asked
students to choose a topic that centers on their current class or assignment given to them by their
professors, find an article using one of the databases, provide a citation of the article and also find
a book that support that topic.

Co-op Highlights complete as needed to track your research

Significant Co-op Successes/Accomplishments
Project Success

Factors That Supported Success

Reflective Practice in classroom

Asked students questions about what they have

learned in the last few weeks of school

Taught students how to incorporate

reflective practices on a weekly bases

Reflect on what changes to make in the next few

weeks.

Quizzed the students on what I have

showed about them last time

Ways to reflect on weekly classroom work

Few new faculty members stopped by the

library for new faculty orientation

Faculty were very impressed with the amount of

tools and resources available to use

Working on an assignment guide for

students

Create an information literacy Libguide in which

students can access from home

Taught information Literacy to JUS400

Provided handouts and tutorials for students to

guide them in their assignments.

Co-op Challenges and Solutions

Project Challenges

Recommended Solutions

Collaboration with library liaisons from the

school of health, professional studies, and
school of business

Collaborating with all the librarians will improve

the amount of feedback throughout the campuses

Lack of uniformed tools: all the librarians

need to work together to create a uniformed
activities, tools and research projects for
students

It will also create better awareness to the library

Still waiting for invitations from more

faculty.

Though it is not mandatory for faculty to ask us to

come to their classrooms, it is very necessary to
teach information literacy to students

Lack of Involvements from the chairs of

each department.

If the chairs of all the department can push the

faculty to welcome the librarians to classrooms it
will increase the currents low grad level and lack
of research abilities from the students

Faculty members need to reduce the

amount of internet sources used in
classrooms

Encourage students to use library resources

(database, textbooks, ebooks, streaming media e.t.c
)

Jus-400 classroom experience students lack

library knowledge

This are Junior students, and they lack how to

access and research using information from the
library. They should know about the library page
during their freshmen.
