Name:

Bridgewater College Teacher Education Program Elementary Lesson Plan

Date: Day 10 of Unit

Title of Lesson: Atoms and Elements continued

Subject Area(s): Science - Matter

Grade Level(s): 5th

VA SOL: 5.4
The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space; and
occurs as a solid, liquid, or gas. Key concepts include:
c. atoms and elements

Content Objective(s):
Learners will be able to...
1.

construct and describe the structure of an atom.

IEP Goal/Objective: same content objective

Accommodations/
Differentiation
Assessment (based on objectives):
1.

Student may have a

pre-cut version of the
atom worksheet.

Students will create an atom with the help of a periodic table.

Time
Planned
5 min

Today we are going to learn more about our family of Atoms that live in
the periodic table!
Introduce and sing the Atoms Family Song
Access/Review Prior Knowledge

5 min

Ask students questions related to atoms.

What did we learn yesterday about the structure of an atom?
What are the particles inside atoms?

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed, or built)

1 min

The main way information will be presented is through worksheets and

practice on these worksheets.
Guided Practice
Go through the Periodic Table worksheet. Begin by having students look at
the top portion with a shortened version of the periodic table. ask students
to highlight or star the labeled element. Have one student read the
paragraph then call on another to summarize the paragraph. Do this for all
three paragraphs. Then have three more students each answer a question
at the bottom and explain why they chose the answer.

10 min
Have a student help to
fill in blanks

Checking for Understanding

Draw a Diagram on the board of an element from the periodic table. Draw
the symbol, name, atomic number and atomic mass. Call on students
randomly and more than once pointing to a different piece each student.
Students should be listening to their peers.

3 min
none

Modeling
Read the top of the World Famous worksheet and have students highlight
or star the remember box. Do number 1 on the World Famous Table
worksheet. Do a think aloud as you go through finding the atomic number
and the atomic mass.

7 min
have a neighbor help
highlight

Guided Practice
Have a student that has not been called on for the other worksheet to work
through number two with you. Tell the students to omit number 11.

3 min
none

Independent Practice
Complete the rest of A World Famous Table worksheet
Guided Practice
Bring up the SmartBoard. Tell the students which element they are going
to create. Randomly call students to place either protons, neutrons, or
electrons.
Homework

sit with student and

have student do
worksheet verbally

10 min
10 min

have student come up

and say which particle
should go where and
how many
2 min

Create a Hydrogen, Oxygen, Helium, Carbon, Sodium, or Potassium atom.

Tell students to use three different colors and make a key as to which color
is protons, neutrons, or electrons and label their atom.
When grading the homework, look only for the correct number of protons,
neutrons, and electrons as well as correct location. However, placing the
electrons correctly with 2 in the first ring, 6 in the second ring and so on is
not as important a focus.
Closure:

2 min

Today we learned all about atoms. We learned what is inside an atom and
where we can find them. We learned about atomic mass, atomic number,
protons, electrons, and neutrons. Turn to you partner and tell them
something about atoms that you didnt know before.
Declarative Statement Summary:
Atoms can be found on the periodic table. In the nucleus of an atom there
are protons and neutrons. Around the nucleus are the electrons.
