What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through
them all.)

Objectives- What are you

teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to
do after this lesson? Include
the ABCDs of objectives:
action, behavior, condition,
and degree of mastery, i.e.,
"C: Given a sentence written
in the past or present tense,
A: the student B: will be able
to re-write the sentence in
future tense D: with no errors
in tense or tense contradiction
(i.e., I will see her
yesterday.)."
Note: Degree of mastery does
not need to be a percentage.)
Evaluation Plan- How will
you know students have
mastered your objectives?

Lesson Content
MAFS.3.OA.1.3.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving
equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations
with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
MAFS.3.OA.1.1.
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 7 as the total number of objects
in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of
objects can be expressed as 5 7.

Students will be able to solve a familiar multi-step math problem under 2 minutes.

The teacher will walk around the room to see if students are on the right track, or if they
are any misconceptions. The teacher should take mental notes/or anecdotal notes of the
students who are not comprehending, or need additional help.

Address the following:

What formative evidence
will you use to document
student learning during
this lesson?
What summative evidence
will you collect, either
during this lesson or in
upcoming lessons?

Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be
thorough. Act as if you needed
a substitute to carry out the
lesson for you.)
Where applicable, be sure to
address the following:
How will materials be
distributed?
How will students
transition between
activities?
What will you as the
teacher do?
What will the students do?
What student data will be
collected during each

Time

Teacher
Teacher should give directions. For example: Say that there is a
math problem on the board, and that they will have about a minute
and a half to two minutes to solve the problem, and that this should
be done independently, and they should use their white boards to
do this task.
Teacher should walk around the room, and see which students are
correctly solving the problem, and which ones are making errors.
While monitoring students, the teacher should also be paying
attention to the time.

Once students are finished, the teacher should then read the
problem, and ask students what she should underline and text code.
The teacher should then call on multiple students and ask what
steps they used to answer the problem. If they teacher needs to
clarify a misconception, then this should be the time to discuss that.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
Multi-step problems help students to pay close attention to detail when reading. Students
are to think about what operations they should use to successfully solve the problem.
Word problems also help students to become better thinkers and problem solvers.
For this lesson, I read the problem to the students, and they used their dry erase markers
and white boards to solve the problem.

Problem solving is an important skill that teaches students how to think critically. It prepares
students for the real world.

Reflection
Doing this mini lesson, I went in more prepared than I did for my last CT observation, and as a result I felt like I did a
better job this time. My job was to do the Math problem of the day, which is like a review question that the students
should be able to answer in less than 5 minutes. The questions that are chosen are usually questions that the students
had problems with. My particular question was from a former Math test that they had, but the wording and numbers
used were slightly altared. The last time, I took too long, so this time I made sure that I was paying attention to the
clock. To make the mini lesson quick, I called on specific students to share what they did, and I wrote it on the board. My
CT did a great job at jumping in whenever she noticed that I needed help. Since my CT co-teaches, I took her feedback
from the 1st time I did it, so that when the afternoon class came, I had a better understanding as to what I should say

and do. When 2nd group of students came in (unfortunately I didnt record it), my CT didnt have to interject as much
because I was better prepared this time around.
