The lesson was already in progress when I entered the room. The teacher had a chart available for the students. The teacher
stated that today we will use the previous articles we have read to write our belief based what we have read from two different
articles.

Students were gather on the floor facing the teacher and chart. The teacher used the ELMO to write the students thoughts and
ideas. The teacher used a student to demonstrate how to retrieve their materials since they have changed desks. Then the
teacher called students by the color lines on the carpet. The teacher questioned students about the placement of their writing. She
reminded students that we are about to write, and we have to remember what to do if you have a question as you begin to
compose.

"In a Close Read....Why does annotating help us?" The students shared responses like because it let's us see what we
understand, what is important, etc. One student stated it could even help us in our writing. "How could this help us in our writing?"
How can we organize all our annotations. The students provided suggestions.

The teacher used the annotation chart and was asked about the value of annotation. The students shared why it was important for
them to annotate in their reading. The teacher built upon the idea a student suggested...to help improve our writing. The teacher
stated that their ways to organize all out annotations. The teacher stated that I have an example of one way...T chart. The teacher
used a chart with one article's positives and negatives. The teacher invited students to recall what should be in a first paragraph.
The students raised their hands to respond. They stated hook, main idea, reasons, etc. ("How many reasons are in a good...")
"This is what I am going to ask you to do...grab our reader's and writer's notebook because of the previous annotations. "Now
remember you are writing in second person..."

The teacher walked around monitoring students. She prompted students as they began to compose and The teacher answered
students' questions individually as they began to compose. After the students composed they came together to share their writing
on the ELMO. Their peers gave the "stars and wishes" for improvement to their pieces.

Finding ways for students to self assess is always difficult. Perhaps using The Teaching Channel or researching a website could
