Content of the Lesson Plan
Title: My Favorite Animal Book!
Grade: 2nd Grade
Curriculum Areas Addressed:
o Common Core Writing Standards
o Common Core Technology Standards Related to Writing
Curriculum Competency Objectives:
o CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2-Write informative/explanatory texts in which they
name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of
closure.
o 1. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion
pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are
writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book (e.g., My
favorite book is . . .).
o 2. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose
informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about
and supply some information about the topic.
o 3. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event
or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they
occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.

o By the end of the lesson, students will have the ability to use the internet to do
basic research about a topic. (Favorite animal). Students will also be required to
do an image search and will learn to copy and paste their desired images to a word

document. The assignment will allow the kids to learn how to type, print, and save
a document using word processing software.
Materials Needed:
o Computers or Laptops with internet access
o Computers or laptops with Microsoft word
o Computer paper
o Printer
o 3-hole punch
o Stapler
o Colorful string or yarn
Time : 1 weeks
Prerequisite content knowledge and skills:
o Before the lesson, Students must be able to form a personal opinion about what
their favorite animal is. They must also have knowledge of how to form complete
sentences.
Prerequisite Computer Knowledge and Skills
o In order to complete this assignment, students must have prior knowledge about
searching the internet
o The students must also have prior knowledge about how to type a document using

Microsoft word
Internet resource:
o http://kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals - Website that students may use to collect

research about their favorite animal


Teacher Presentation:
o As the teacher I will choose my favorite animal and present it to the class so the
students will have an example of what type of questions should be answered in
their story book (why is this your favorite animal, where around the world can
they be found, description of the animal, etc.) . Once everyone has finished typing
their stories, I will give a tutorial on how to copy and paste an image from the
internet onto their word documents and also how to spell check and print their
document. Once their documents are all printed I will assist them with the

completion of their books by helping them 3-hole punch the book and tie it
together with either yarn or ribbon.
