Miss Ward/2nd grade Science/???

I. Topic: The layers of the Earth (Crust, Mantle, Inner Core, Outer Core) & what they
are made of
Goal: for students to know how many layers are in the Earth, what they are
called, what they are made of, and be able to identify them if given an unlabeled
structure of the layers of the Earth.

II. Objectives/Standards
Introduce students to the 4 layers of the Earth-what they are and a bit about
them using kinetic, visual, and auditory learning.
TSWBAT: Name the layers of the earth, tell what they are made of, and
accurately label them on a diagram of the 4 layers. They will be able to
name/label the 4 layers with 100% accuracy and tell what they are made of
with 80% accuracy.
S.K.-2.D.1.1. Describe various materials that make up the Earth
III. Teaching Procedures
1) Intro/Anticipatory Set: Introduce lesson, get the students attention/focus
and provide an overview of the days Science lesson. Play youtube video (Dr.
Binocs Structure of the Earth) 31/2 min. section should take 5 with greeting
kids, having them sit, and asking them what they can tell me about the
Earths crust after the video is done playing. (F.A. think, pair and share, have
them tell their desk partner 2 things they learned from the video for 1
minute) (F.A. then quiz students by asking them to call out the names of the
layers of the earth as a whole class, point to each layer and then they say it)
2) Development:
Now that we know the layers of the Earth, lets learn what theyre made of
F.A. Can anyone tell me what they think each layer is made of? Go through
each layer, Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core. After you hear their
answers, clarify and expound on their knowledge.
Crust: The crust is made entirely of hard rock, like granite. (hold up piece of
hard rock)
Mantle: The mantle is made entirely of rock, but its not completely hard like
the inner core, instead its kind of squishy, like playdough (could pass
around playdough if you wanted to, but at least hold it up. Preferably red
coloured.)
Outer Core: The outer core is liquid and mostly made of nickel and iron.
(liquid metal example?)
Inner Core: The inner core is solid and mostly made of iron and nickel. (hold
up metal ball)

Recap: the inner and the outer core are both made of metal. (possibly insert:
who can tell me the names of those metals?)
3) Guided practice: using class dojo, randomly select students to tell which
layer of the earth youre pointing to and what its made of (make this a game
if kids are needing to moveie. randomly make teams of 5 students and
have them write on white boards their answer and whoever gets it first and
correctly wins. If first group to answer is incorrect, then second can answer)
3 minutes F.A.
Moving Earth Activity: (can be done with volunteers or by drawing slips of
paper out of a basket with assignments on it)
Now that we know the layers of the earth, what each layer is called, and
what each layer is made of, how would you like to try to make a living
earth? (let kids answer question, then begin)
I need 1 volunteer to be the core. Whos super strong? I need someone who
can pump the iron, and keep going because its a big job and very important
to have a core. *set up kid in middle of circle & have them flex*
Take 6 volunteers and set them up as the outer core. Have them circle
around the inner core flapping their arms up and down.
Take 12 volunteers and set them up as the mantle. Have them walk around
the outer core moving their arms up and down and shouting, hot rock, hot
rock, hot rock
Take the remaining students & have them circle around the mantle & hold
hands, moving from side to side, they chant moving plates
4) Independent Assessment/Closure: S.A. Have students finish (last 5
minutes of class) with a blank colouring sheet that has the layers of the earth
without labels. Have them colour the picture an appropriate colour for its
layer (ie. grey for inner core, red for mantle because inner core is metal and
mantle is hot rock) and label the sections correctly. (Note: If students do not
finish this, then have him/her take it home for homework, but ideally each
child will at least complete the labeling portion.) Grade this, but of points
for completion, and for accuracy. This can be used to assess whether
students grasped the material and if they can apply their knowledge. (Walk
around as they work on this and provide encouragement/assistance if
needed)

IV. Materials/Things I need to teach this lesson:
-earths layers examples (ie. small metal ball, liquid metal example, red
playdough, and hard rock piece)
-colouring pages, enough copied for whole class
-white boards and markers, if game route is taken
-class dojo account and class set up
-need computer, screen to put video on or smartboard, and youtube video
pulled up
-need big unlabeled poster of the 4 layers of the earth
-need big labeled and colourful poster of the 4 layers of the earth
-slips of paper with assignments written on them, depending on class
number of students, and a basket to draw out of (if deciding to forgo
volunteers)
V. Adaptations/Plan Modifications:
For my student with hearing difficulties: I will play the youtube video with CC
and I will face specifically towards him/her so he/she can read my lips. I will
check several times when Im walking around to make sure that he/she is
able to keep up and that theyre understanding the lesson. Ill personally ask
them a couple times if they need me to repeat anything as well.
VI. Evaluation
1) Formative. See above. (labeled F.A.)
2) Summative. See above. (labeled S.A.)
Colouring page will be both F.A. & S.A. It will be worth 10 pts, for
completion and for accuracy.
VII. Reflection
1) Student Questions:
Did students stay focused and engaged during the lesson?

Were they able to show me that they had learned the earth layers and what
they were made of by the end of the class and that they understood what
they were learning?
Were students able to keep up with the many activities and did they enjoy
them? Were there too many activities?
2) Teacher Questions
Was I effective in teaching the lesson; did I incorporate several different
learning strategies for my diverse group of students?
Did I speak clearly and pay attention to where I was facing in the class so
that my hearing impaired child was able to follow along?
Did I keep the class moving in an efficient way so that we could get to most
of our lesson/all of it if possible, but not in a way that hindered learning?
What can I do better next time? How can I help my students learn better?
