In 3-5 years I see myself continuing my education to become a nurse practitioner.

Strengths

Direct
Patient Care
Leadership

I believe one of my greatest

strengths is the ability to
therapeutically communicate
with the patients. In addition,
I have the ability to stay calm
when situations become
stressful. Attention to detail is
something I focus a lot on as
well.
I believe planning is one of
my greatest strengths related
to leadership on a unit. In
addition, I believe I work
particularly well with others.
Also, I can admit when I am
wrong and learn from my
mistakes.

Leadership

Weakness/ Opportunity for

Improvement
I would like to work on becoming
more confident in the clinical
setting to reassure patients they are
receiving quality care. In addition,
I would like to gain more
experience talking to physicians
and other health care professionals
because I have not had too many
opportunities dealing with that.
I need to improve on speaking up
and having my opinions heard. In
other words, I need to become
more of leader and obtain
leadership qualities. In addition, I
would like to get better at
delegating tasks.

Shadowing a charge nurse

was extremely beneficial
because I would like to hold a
position of leadership as
mentioned above. This

The role of the charge nurse

includes patient care, but it is not a
main component of their
responsibilities which concerns me
because I really enjoy patient care.

Short term goals/ strategies

Present-2years
Exude confidence in patients
rooms. I believe experience on the
floor with create opportunities to
gain confidence.

Long term goals/ strategies

3-5 years
Become familiar with various
medications, and diagnosis to be
able to provide the best patient
care.

As I begin my career as a nurse, I

would like work on my confidence
so that I will be able to take on a
clinical lead position.

Be a strong leader on a unit that

is respected by other nurses and
physicians.

I would like to work in the

intensive care unit as a registered
nurse so a certification for critical
care would be something I strive
for as a registered nurse
beginning my career.

After a few years and possibly

obtaining a position of
leadership, I would be eager to
implement changes within an
organization that would improve
quality of care.

allowed me to get a strong

idea of what the
responsibilities were. In
addition, the charge nurse
was able to offer various
educational opportunities
throughout the day in regards
to patient diagnosis, EKG,
etc.
Participating in the
Integrative Nursing in Action
presentations at the College of
Nursing was extremely
beneficial and expanded my
knowledge of nonpharmacological methods in
symptom control. The Fred
Archer Community Center
IPEP Event allowed me to
work simultaneously with
pharmacy, medical, and
public health students so it
gave me an idea how it is
working in a hospital and
consulting with pharmacy
and physicians.
I would like to eventually go
back to school to obtain my
DNP and become a nurse
practitioner.

Although they oversee the entire

floor, they only perform patient
care when it is urgent. In addition,
I shadowed the charge nurse on
Sunday, which was a slow day for
charge nurses so I would
recommend shadowing during the
week.
Some of the methods such as reiki
and acupressure would be difficult
to implement as a nurse on most
units in a hospital. In addition, the
IPEP event is a study that takes
place over the next year and I was
only able to attend the first day.
This may have taken away from
the overall experience.

I believe the opportunities and

experiences I obtain as a registered
nurse will ultimately lead to
greater success as a nurse
practitioner.

For at least two years, I would

like to work as a register nurse to
gain experience on the floor and
better prepare myself to move up.

I would eventually like to take on

a position of leadership prior to
going back to school to get my
DNP.
