Exploring Animal Life Cycles

Ms. Mckeel & Ms. Messina
2nd Grade

December 02, 2015

Common Core Science Standard

L.1: Structure and Functions of Living Organisms: Understanding
animal life cycles.
> L.1.1: Summerize the life cycles of animals:
Birth
Developing into an adult
Reproducing
Aging and death
> L.1.2: Compare life cycles of different animals such as, but not
limited to, mealworms, ladybugs, crickets, guppies or frogs.

Learning Objective
Given various animals, student will be able to identify the life cycle of a
specific animal and compare/contrast it with other animal life cycles with
85% accuracy.

Warm Up: 6 volunteers needed. Each student come up to the smart board one at a
time, pick a box, and draw what you think the animal looks like!

There are 4 stages of a frog life cycle.

1.The female frog lays eggs.
2. The eggs then become a tadpole.
3. The tadpole develops into a froglet.
3. The tadpole transforms into a frog.

Butterflies undergo metamorphosis

which is where they go through 4
different life cycles.
1.The female butterfly lays eggs on a
leaf.
2. A caterpillar also known as a larva
hatches from each egg.
3. The caterpillar becomes chrysalis
also known as a pupa.
4. The last stage is where the chrysalis
becomes a beautiful adult butterfly.

Metamorphosis

The pupa stage lasts from a few days to many

months.
The transformation of an animal during its life
cycle.

A girl butterfly lays these on a leaf.

A tiny larva, hatches from the egg.

It eats leaves and molts (sheds its skin)
many times as it grows.

The bear has 3 stages in a life cycle1.The adult female bear has a baby bear also
known as cub.
2. The cub transforms into a kid bear.
3. The kid bear transforms into a adult bear.

The chicken life cycle also has

three stages1. A female chicken lays an egg.
2. In about three weeks the egg will hatch
and a chick will be born.
3. After three months the chick will turn into
an adult chicken.

Amphibians live in water and on

land. They begin their lives in
water and then they grow
lungs, and legs they can live on
land.

There are 4 things that make

up an insect.
1. They have a segmented
body.
2. Multiple jointed limbs or legs.
3. An Exoskeleton.
4. They are cold blooded.

There are 3 things that make up a mammal.

1.Have hair/ fur.
2.Warm blooded.
3. They have glands that secrete (give)milk.
This allows them to feed their young.

If an animal has feathers

and is born out of an hard
shell (egg) they are
classified as a bird.

What do animals eat ?

Bears are omnivores just like
people! This mean bears like to eat
meat. Bears also like to eat berries,
nuts and tree branches. If bears live
close to water they also like to catch
and eat fish.

Chickens like to eat fruit,

vegetables, grains,grass,
and seeds.

Frogs are carnivores.

Which means they will
eat meat. Frogs like to
eat insects such as, flies,
mosquitos. Larger frogs
may eat worms and
grasshoppers.

Butterflies get their

nurishment from drinking
nectar out of flowers.

Amphibians
-they are born.
-they spend their childhood under
water,breathing with gills.
-they grow into adults and move to
the land, breathing with lungs.
* Most frogs can live up to 5 years.

Insects
Egg is were they are born.
larva- this is when most of
the feeding is done. (they
like to eat)
pupa: inactive (no eating)
stage between larva and
adult stages.
adult:final stage normally
grows wings.
* No adult butterfly can live
past a year.

Mammals
Mammals are born from their mothers,

Birds

and then they grow up.

1.Birds hatch from an egg.

It is hard to predict when

2. They then transform into a chick.

each mammal can die.

3. The chick become an adult bird.

* Since there are various speices of
birds it is hard to predict how long
birds all together can live.
* Chickens live up to 10 to 15 years.

Compare & Contrast: Using the 1st Venn Diagram, compare and contrast the butterfly
and the chicken's life. Using the 2nd Venn Diagram, compare and contrast the frog and the bear's
life. Keep in mind what you learned about animal life cycles and animal settings.
