Excursion Title: Faction Athletics Carnival

Destination: Wallace Park, West Lamington
Teacher in charge: Vanessa Furlong
Date(s): 29th August 2014

Purpose Of The Excursion

How does this excursion relate to the curriculum?
What are the anticipated outcomes for students?
The Faction Athletics Carnival is an annual event for primary school students. It directly relates to the Health &
Physical Education outcomes as defined by the Australian Curriculum Framework. Students will be applying
skills they have learnt throughout the term in Phys-Ed in a number of events including running, jumping,
throwing, and multi-skill team games. These activities all encourage physical movement. The carnival also
provides an opportunity for students to get along with students from other year levels and enables them to
develop team spirit. Students are presented with the opportunity compete individually as well as part of a team.
1. Assessing The Risks
1.1 Environment

Where are you going? (e.g. name, location)

How have you assessed the suitability of the venue(s)? (e.g. visit, website, phone call)
For overnight stays, how have you assessed the suitability of the accommodation?
What risks have you identified in the environment?
How will you minimise these risks?
Do you have any other relevant information?

The Faction Athletics Carnival will be held at Wallace Park located between Colin St and Bourke St in West
Lamington.
Suitability of this location has been assessed by all Phys-Ed teachers in Kalgoorlie and was chosen for a
number of factors. These factors include its visible and accessible toilets, the size of the grassed area, parking
and its close proximity to the school. The oval is also being used by 2 other primary schools in Kalgoorlie for
their Faction Athletics Carnivals.
Potential risks have been identified, they are:
Students travelling to and from the event
Children using the public toilets.
Student going missing in or from a public location.
These risks will be minimised through strong supervision by teaching staff and education assistants. It will
ensure that Parents have indicated on a form that they are aware that each child will need to make their

own way to the event. Students are not under the schools duty of care until they arrive at the
location. Upon arrival, students must report to their classroom teacher and have their
attendance recorded. Parents have also been asked to indicate if students require transport
back to school or if they are to be dismissed from Wallace Park. Parents must inform the
classroom teacher that they are taking their child. Students that are walking/riding will be
released at once. Students being collected are to remain seated in their faction bay.
Any student that required assistance in travelling to or from the event has been identified.
Permission has been sought to have these children privately transported to the venue.
When students are not competing in an event, they will be seated in their faction bays. The
students will be directly supervised by 2 teachers in each bay as well as Education Assistants.
These teachers will be advised to administration two weeks prior to the carnival.
Children will be marshalled when their events are about to begin.
Students will have access to 4 toilet passes, 2 girls and 2 boys. This will be the maximum
number of students in the toilets at one time from each faction. Names of students who hold
the toilet passes at a particular time will be recorded in the faction bay supervisor file. Passes
are to be promptly returned to faction supervisors.
Head counts will be conducted at regular intervals as indicated on the timetable. Supervising
teachers will have a list of students in their file who are under their supervision. This
information will be extracted from the list of students with permission to attend the carnival as
well as notification of absent students on the day once classroom roles have been taken.
An event outline with a list of competitors will be in each faction bay file so that they are aware
of students whereabouts at all times.
Along with the student lists, parent contact details will also be carried in the event of a medical
emergency. These details will be held in the records/first aid marquee

Students who require Ventolin will be required to bring this along on the day, students whose Ventolin is

stored by the school their Ventolin will be located at the first aid site.
Individual Epipens usually stored at school will be held in the first aid marquee.
