Topic: Common Final Blends; Text Features; Questions such as who what where why
and when
Essential Questions:
How do Text features help you locate key facts or information?
How can asking and answering questions help you learn more about the key details
of a text?
Standards:
NJCCCS R1.2.1 Ask and answer questions pertaining to who, what, when, and where
using key details or facts from the text.
NJCCCS R1.2.5 Identify and use various text features (e.g., captions), to locate key
facts or information and to determine the meaning of words and phrases relevant to
a grade two topic.
NJCCS 2.3.f Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
Objectives and Assessments:

Assessments
Teacher will listen to students
responses during group work. Teacher
will visually check students phonics
worksheet.
After independent reading, students will
share a text feature with the class that
they shared with their partner.

Dry Erase Board and markers

Pre-Lesson/Prior Knowledge: Students have previously learned about final


blends. Students have previously read the Anchor Text and discussed text features.
Lesson Beginning: Students will meet teacher on the carpet. Today we are going
to continue our phonics lesson on blends. We learn about how words come together
and the sound letters make in order to help us understand words better. When we
understand words we become better readers.
Instructional Plan

Students will repeat words and ending sound sounds to warm up.

o Sick, sink
o Tramp, trap
o Sift, sit
Blends power point presentation
o Teacher will use apple tv to show students pictures
o Students will identify the picture and name the final consonant blend
Students will be given a clip board and the worksheet to complete.

Re-read Animals Building Homes in Journeys


o Discuss how you can use text features such as a heading to figure out
the information that the author is presenting.
o Call on students to read passages aloud
o Call on students to locate text features in the text
Identify independent readers; ask them to hold up one nonfiction text they
will read during independent reading
o Tell students they will read independently and then they will turn and
talk and tell their partner a text feature they found.
Identify students who will be using Lexia and who will have a Guided Reading
lesson.
Release students to Work Period

Differentiation:

Independent readers will read books on his/her independent reading level


Guided Reading Groups- teacher will use guided reading material appropriate
to students level
Lexia- program allows students to move at an appropriate pace

Closer: Teacher will instruct student to log off of Lexia and to put away materials
then to meet on the carpet. She will ask independent readers to share a text feature
they found while reading with the group. (5minutes)
