Re entry within Virginia Prison Systems Annotated Bibliography

Wikoff, Nora; Linhorst, Donald; Moranie, Nicole. Recidivism among Participants of a Reentry
Program for Prisoners Released without Supervision. Dec. 2012.
Provides information regarding the productiveness of offenders once they are released back into
society. Includes the recidivism rate amongst those offenders who were released and return back
into the prison system, as well as how long they were released before returning back. Discuss
the differences in those offenders who were not supervised verses the offenders who were.
Compared the both supervised and unsupervised offenders and if there was a huge difference in
the recidivism rate. This article is useful because it gives positive information advising the reader
that not all ex offender have to be supervised to make a positive change in life.

Listwan, Shelley; Cullen, Francis T.; Latessa, Edward. How to Prevent Prisoner Re-entry
Program From Failing: Insights From Evidence-Based Corrections. Dec. 2006, Vol. 7.
Provides Evidence Based practices that were successful in prison reentry programs. This article
gave information on offender conduct and what makes an offender react the was he/she does.
The information is informative and geared toward make re-entry programs successful.
Discussed was that would make re-entry programs unsuccessful if not provided with accurate
information. It focuses on being effective through communication as well as listen skills. This
article gives detail on offenders behavior and their thought process when faced with a difficult
situation.

Frita, J.; Walter, B.Krajewski, E. Prison Re-entry: An Assets-based, Capacity Building


Community Practice Pilot Program. (2010)
Describes one pilot program to build capacity in the community. This pilot program is geared
towards ex-offenders who are mentally disabled giving them the skills and resources needed to
be productive citizens. This is a powerful program which not only benefits the offenders, it

benefit the citizens within the community which they will be returning back to. This pilot
program gives insight on training ex offenders so that they would be productive law abiding
citizens. Programs such as this should be wide spread and not only offered to ex offenders with
mental illness or disabilities, but to all offenders. The relevance in this article is there are
programs that provided to offenders while incarcerated and once they are released that will make
them productive law abiding citizens.

Huyhh, Kim. Evaluation of the Positive Re-entry in Corrections Program. 2015 August.
Provides training lectures, discussions and homework to ex offenders that would make this
psychology Re-entry program positive. Details the differences on pre and post intervention
scores of these offenders. Focus on optimal functioning and individuals becoming valuable
members of society when returning back into their communities. Provides informative
information on the data collected to make this program successful, which consist of primary
analyses, procedures and Measures. This program teaches offender positive principles using
several different ways to be successful.

Semien, Demetrius. The Diversity of Re-entry Social Networks. Race, Gender & Class. 2013.
Provides information from individuals who have experienced diversity issues once they are
released from prisons. Provide skills and training to those who have been incarcerated for a long
period of time so that that would be effective and able to adjust to society. Due to culture and
generation changes, this will allow these individuals to understand gender differences, social
class and ages just to name a few. This allows individuals to network with people of all types of
race, gender, ages, and culture.

Listwan, Shelley. The Pains of Imprisonment Revisited: The Impact of Strain on Inmate
Recidivism. (2013) August.
Discusses the impact of strain on inmates recidivism. Informs of the many different strains
within a short time span in prisons. Impact of strains may be caused by self-esteem issues which
may cause criminal and non-criminal behaviors. Provides many social challenges upon release
from prison, and states prior research has shown that they have a high risk for recidivism. This
article is useful because it allows individuals to understand that there will be struggles but if they
continue to focus and surround themselves around positive people and take positive avenues they
can overcome any challenge that comes their way.

Media.
Describes the development of a parolee once released from prison. Gives details of the obstacles
that this parolee had to overcoming once released. Discussed in detail the challenges that
accrued and the difficulties that were ahead. Give information on what steps were taken to be
productive and successful for re-entry. Provide resources that assist with making the individual
re-entry a success.

Travis, Jeremy. Prisons, Work and Re-Entry. (1999) Oct. Masterfile Premier.
Discuses support from numerous corrections professionals with the prison systems. Resource to
include prisons, community and community corrections. Give informative information on skills,
management skills, and work ethics. Provide barriers that may block inmate employment and
how to overcome these barriers. Discuss programs available for community re-entry and how
positive and productive these programs are. Evidence Based Programs in the future will
demonstrate how effective re-entry is for inmates returning back into their communities. With
good resources and programing, re-entry will be successful in the future.

Provides insight on an easier transition for African American men once they are released from
prison. Discuss issues with lack of information being received for relational risk. Discuss the
negative effects and how it is documented. Provides analysis regarding how national, state and
local programs can identify the risks and development of African American men who are
released from our prison system. Provide data and records on the risk and resilience of the
effects that re-entry have on these individuals families.

Serin, Ralph. Enhancing offender re-entry: An integrated model for enhancing offender re-entry.
(2009).
Provides information pertaining to the enhancement of the integrated mode for re-entry.
Provides information on organization development, Evidence Based principle and collaboration.
Building policy and service delivery for collaboration. Was to reduce recidivism and alignment
with principle and practices. Details on learning organization, culture assessment, shared
readings and Healing Environment just to name a few. Under the integrated model for re-entry, it
takes all three (Evidence Based principles, Organizational development and Collaboration) to
enhance offender re-entry which focuses on the offender as well as other stakeholders within our
prison systems.
