1. Title or Topic of the lesson and Grade Level
Title: All about the letter U
Grade Level: Kindergarten
2. Lesson Guiding Question(s):
What is the sound of U?
What words start with U?
How do I write an uppercase and lowercase U?
3. Standards: Identify the appropriate standards that you will assess in this lesson.

must correlate to the NJCCC Standards addressed above.
B. Assessments: Describe the assessments you will use to measure student progress towards or
success in attaining the learning objectives. You may include homework assignments.

Students will be able to write upper and lower
case U.
Students will be able to recognize objects that
start with U.

Assessments

their workbook. The teacher will walk around
to make sure the students are writing it
correctly.

6. Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:

Students already have an understanding of some letters including t, b, and f.
Students may not have saw or written the letter I before, so it will be important to make sure
that when I am modeling how to write the letter I the students will understand what lines they
are using to write an upper case U and a lower case U.
7. Lesson Beginning:
To start the teacher will bring out the alphabet poster to go over the sounds of the alphabet.
(For example A, the teacher will say A, sound out A, and give an example of an A word such
as apple.) Students will echo the teacher after every letter.
The teacher will then explain to the students, todays letter of the day is U. The teacher will
repeat U, sound out U, and give an example of an U word.
8. Instructional Plan:
The teacher will introduce the book Umbrellabirds Umbrella. The students will then listen to
the read aloud of the book Umbrellabirds Umbrella. While the students hear the recording
the teacher will hold the book and show the pictures of the corresponding pages. After the
story, the students will sing their ABCs. After they sing the ABCs they will sing it again this
time stopping when they get to the letter U. The teacher will then model how to write an
uppercase U and a lowercase U on the board. After explaining how to write U, the teacher
will write it again (this time writing it incorrectly) and ask the students to explain why the
way the teacher is writing it is wrong. Lastly, the students will use two fingers write
uppercase and lowercase U in the air, following the teachers model.
o Differentiation:
Early finishers can practice writing letters they already know on their white board.
o Questions:
How many objects can you find that begin with the letter U?
Where do we start when we write the letter U?
o Instructional Management:
Students will sit at their respective carpet spots for the reading of Umbrellabirds
Umbrella.
After the read aloud and modeling of writing the uppercase and lowercase letter
U, students will be sent back to their tables by table color.
The teachers will pass out the English Workbook to the students.
o Transitions: Describe how you will transition and make connections between activities.
Students will sing the alphabet once, the next time they sing the alphabet they will
stop at the Letter U. After this activity students will go from the carpet to their
seat.
9. Closure:

Students will transition from the carpet to their tables. Students will open to the first page
with the letter U. The whole class will then use two fingers and trace with their fingers how
to write uppercase and lowercase U. Students will then work independently to finish the next
two pages, working on writing uppercase and lowercase U. Students will raise their hand
when they are finished the two independent pages.
