Interactive Learning Object

Project Description
This learning object was one lesson in a larger e-learning course designed to teach high
school students in Quality Schools International schools to create a Social Studies
documentary using the Microsoft Photo Story 3 software. This particular lesson focused
on instruction of the zoom and pan tools and was designed to highlight my ability to
create interactive instructional lessons.
Standards Met
This project demonstrates proficiencies in the following AECT standards: Standard 1
Content Knowledge, Standard 2 Content Pedagogy, and Standard 3 Learning
Environments. The chart below illustrates the performances that fulfill the AECT
standards.

AECT 2012 Standards

Standard 1 Content Knowledge: Candidates demonstrate the knowledge necessary
to create, use, assess, and manage theoretical and practical applications of educational
technologies and processes.
Performance indicators:
1.2 Using. Candidates demonstrate the
ability to select and use technological
resources and processes to support
student learning and to enhance their
pedagogy.

Justification
1.2 Adobe Captivate was used in
conjunction with a website as the
technological resources for this project.
Captivate was used in order to make use
of the quiz feature as assessment tool for
some of the lessons.

1.2 Using. Candidates demonstrate the

ability to select and use technological
resources and processes to support
student learning and to enhance their
pedagogy.
Standard 2 Content Pedagogy: Candidates develop as reflective practitioners able to
demonstrate effective implementation of educational technologies and processes based
on contemporary content and pedagogy.
Performance indicators:
2.1 Creating. Candidates apply content
pedagogy to create appropriate
applications of processes and
technologies to improve learning and
performance outcomes.

Justification
2.1 Processes and technologies
corresponded to correct pedagogical
theories, also making use of cognitive
theories of learning to ensure instruction is
effective and has minimal distractions for

2.2 Using. Candidates implement

appropriate educational technologies and
processes based on appropriate content
pedagogy.

learners.
2.2 Adobe Captivate and the
corresponding website where lessons
were hosted were used successfully for
learning sessions. Users reported no
issues with the technologies themselves.

2.4 Managing. Candidates manage

appropriate technological processes and
resources to provide supportive learning
communities, create flexible and diverse
learning environments, and develop and
demonstrate appropriate content
pedagogy.

2.4 Lessons had built-in tools and breaks

to allow learners to pause/replay/review
content material in order to learn at their
own pace. Content incorporated audio,
visual, and kinesthetic components to the
training.

2.5 Ethics. Candidates design and select

media, technology, and processes that
emphasize the diversity of our society as a
multicultural community.

2.5 Presentation software was used

(Adobe Captivate) that featured controls
similar to YouTube and other globally-used
social-media sites, allowing for easy
control of the speed of instruction for users
from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Standard 3 Learning Environments: Candidates facilitate learning by creating,

using, evaluating, and managing effective learning environments.
Performance indicators:
3.1 Creating. Candidates create
instructional design products based on
learning principles and research-based
best practices.
3.2 Using. Candidates make
professionally sound decisions in selecting
appropriate processes and resources to
provide optimal conditions for learning
based on principles, theories, and effective
practices.
3.5 Ethics. Candidates foster a learning
environment in which ethics guide practice
that promotes health, safety, best practice
and respect for copyright, Fair Use, and
appropriate open access to resources.
3.6 Diversity of Learners. Candidates
foster a learning community that
empowers learners with diverse
backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.

Justification
3.1 Instructional solution is designed to
minimize unnecessary distractions
(animations,etc.) while maintaining an
informal and amiable script/narration to
engage learners on a personal level.
3.2 An online learning environment is used
to allow for individualized learning as
learners proceed through the lesson at
their own pace. Lesson video is sized to fit
a variety of devices so that learners do not
need to scroll back and forth to view
content.
3.5 Sources and third-party materials are
used correctly with no copyright violation.
All materials used are used with
permission and have been cited
appropriately.
3.6 Target group participants in this project
were from a number of different countries,
spoke several different languages and,
while somewhat similar in technological

ability, still differed somewhat in their

comfort with technology.

Modifications Made
After the original draft was published, formative evaluation began with members
of the target group. Although no large-scale modifications needed to be made,
smaller changes/improvements were made based on feedback from this group
as well as feedback from the professor. Some of the changes made were the
following:
1. Use of focus boxes to draw learners eyes to the important part of the
screen.

2. Use of the Adobe Captivate hotspots tool for more authentic

assessment. (Users click on the portion of the image that contains the
correct answer, thus simulating use of the software.) Hotspot assessment
opportunities also provided immediate feedback via pop-up circles when
the cursor was in the correct location.

Other changes made in later drafts were the following:

1. Pre-learning terms (zoom and pan) were highlighted visually with
separate slides instead of solely relying on narration.
