Fandoms Unite
Teen Summer Reading Program
Description:
The Fandoms Unite! Teen Summer Reading Program is a series of related events
for teens in grades 6-12 at the Oconee County Library. This program will focus
on the different fandoms teens identify themselves with. This program series will
meet once a week for 10 weeks and cover fandoms such as Harry Potter,
anime, Hunger Games, comics, Fault in Our Stars, Doctor Who, and Divergent.
The Kickoff will be featuring Tonks and the Aurors, which is a Wizard Rock band,
who writes and plays music about Harry Potter. The End of SRP event will be a
cosplay contest where teens can dress up in ANY fandom cosplay. Prizes for
cosplay will be given out, as well as the prizes for the top two readers and the
teen with the most event attendance.
Plan:
Fandoms Unite! Teen Summer Reading Program events will be held Wednesdays
from 6:00-8:00pm in the Auditorium of the Oconee County Library. Parents are
encouraged to drop off their teen and pick them up at 8:00pm, though the
parent may stay and observe if they wish.
Preparations:
Use the room reservation calendar to reserve the Auditorium for each night,
allowing time for setup and cleanup.
Search for fandom-based books on and put them on hold on the WAT YA library
card account. All books in each series will be displayed at coordinating event.
Be sure to include novellas, companions, and any other relevant books.

Events:
June 1: Kickoff Concert: Tonks and the Aurors
Prep: Reserve auditorium for all day, to include time for setup. Set up
tables for refreshments, chairs and stage area. Decorate with welcome sign,
string lights and bunting. Have fliers for other events in a place where teens and
parents cant miss.
June 8: Doctor Who Galaxy Shirts
Prep: Make bleach water mixture and pour into all spray bottles. Put up
tables and chairs. Cover tables with vinyl tablecloths (found in janitors closet).
Set out a t-shirt at each place and a spray bottle in between for them to share.
Use stencil blanks to create a TARDIS stencil. Make an example t-shirt using
bleachwater, stencil. While its drying, start adding acrylic paint for stars and
galaxies. The brighter colors the better (pink, purple, yellow and turquoise work
well). Let that dry while putting a table up with cookies and fliers. Gather plastic
grocery bags for the teens to put their t-shirt in when going home.
June 15: Fandom Film Fest: Summer Wars
Prep: Use OCL Friends popcorn popper to pop popcorn. Place a table
out for it with individual sized bags and the big bowl (use a cup for a scoop.)
Get the rocking gaming chairs from YA section and beanbag chair from
childrens section for teens to sit in while watching the movie.
June 22: Harry Potter Cooking Class
Prep: Make the rice crispies the day before. Put in disposable pans to cool
and transport. Microwave the almond bark in tall glasses or jars and stir until
smooth. Place glasses in water bath in the crockpots to keep them warm and
soft. Keep crockpots on low during the event. Set up tables into 4 groups
(which represents the 4 HP houses). Cover all tables in tablecloths for easy
cleanup. Teens can vote on which Harry Potter movie to watch while they make
their treats. Have DVD player and sound system hooked up.

For Golden Snitch Pops: Each group of tables will get a pan of rice
crispies, some cake pop sticks, toothpicks and a piece of fondant. Teens will roll
squares of rice crispies into balls and put on cake pop stick. Then they dip the
cake pops into the melted almond bark, coat them in gold sprinkles, and make
wings out of fondant and adhere them to the snitch with toothpicks.
For Butterbeer Floats: Make a float using vanilla ice cream and cream
soda. Teen can use whip cream and butterscotch syrup for toppings.
For Magic Wands: Teens dip pretzel rods into melted almond bark and
decorate them with various nuts and sprinkles.
June 29: Marvel vs. DC Battle
Prep: Set up tables and chairs. Create or find on the internet a quiz for the
teens to take to determine whether they really belong to the DC or Marvel
universe. After they each take their quiz, split up into the two teams, and play
Comics Jeopardy. Create the trivia game ahead of time using this template
(www.elainefitzgerald.com/Jeopardy1Template.ppt) or create your own template.
While they battle it out, they can decorate doughnuts with the logos of their
favorite DC and Marvel characters.
July 6: Fault in our Stars Craft Night
Prep: Set up tables and chairs. Play movie in the background. Set up
copies of the book, John Greens other books, and TFIOS readalikes. Make an
example of a pillowcase and canvas shoes. Set out all acrylic paint and
brushes, small plates for the paint, and cups of water.
July 13: Fandom Film Fest: Mockingjay Part 2
Prep: Use OCL Friends popcorn popper to pop popcorn. Place a table
out for it with individual sized bags and the big bowl (use a cup for a scoop.)
Get the rocking gaming chairs from YA section and beanbag chair from
childrens section for teens to sit in while watching the movie.
July 20: Divergent Games and Trivia
Prep: When teens arrive, sort them into factions based on a quiz (example:
http://bookshub.wikia.com/wiki/Divergent_Faction_Flowchart). Teens who
identify as Divergent can go to a smaller Faction group that may need a few
more members. After they split up, each faction will do assigned task for thirty
minutes, then after thirty minutes, the whole group will come together to play
the trivia game the Erudite faction created.

Marketing:
Online:
By using social media (Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, blog, etc.), the library can
connect with the teens (and parents of teens), and remind them of upcoming
programs and give a tease of the upcoming speaker or career theme.
Molly Moore 5
In the email blast newsletter sent to teens and parents, a separate section just
for the I Can Be Series will be created and maintained. This will include
upcoming speakers and topics as well as logistics (date, time, registration, etc.)
Relevant books relating to the career theme will be hyperlinked to the librarys
e-book where teens can immediately borrow the e-book onto their phone,
computer or e-reader.
Physical:
In the library, posters will be displayed in the YA department, on the doors, and
any other bulletin boards. The publicity monitors around the library will display
an image with necessary information in the slideshow. At the YA desk and
circulation desk, calendar brochures are given out with meeting times and
dates and the career theme information.
During outreach with schools, bookmarks with candy will be handed out to
teens interested and given to the media specialist, advisors, and career center
workers.
A press release will be sent to Oconee Parent Magazine, as well as local

Considerations:
Two events will be registration required: Doctor Who galaxy shirts and Harry
Potter cooking class. To register, teens (or their parents) must stop by the front
circulation desk to sign up or they can call the library. For each event, there will
be an allotted number of attendees, but if theres a cancellation, the teens on
the waiting list will get contacted first.
Evaluation tool:
At the end of the SRP, a quick survey will be sent to the participants via
surveymonkey for them to fill out. YA Staff will use the contact information and
email addresses from the sign-in sheet from each SRP event to send out the
surveys. The survey will ask the following three questions to assess the success of
the Summer Reading Program:
1. Which events did you attend?
2. Did you read any books this summer? If yes, how many?
3. Which event did you like the most/least and why?
