INTRODUCTION
Hello and welcome to The O'Donnell / Gillespie
FamilyTree.
At first glance you might think that it is based on
me and my wife Moira Gillespies families, but it
is not, it is based on my grandparents families,
Jimmy (Johnny) O'Donnell and Anne (Biddy
Thiomlin) Gillespie. My grandmother died in
1931, aged 36, and Jimmy Johnny remarried ,
probably as a result of that I can't remember
having much contact with the Gillespie side of
the family with the exception of Anthony
Gillespie and his wife Sadie when they lived in
Glasgow for a few years.

My grandparents, Jimmy O'Donnell and Anne Gillespie, married and coincidentally when I got married it was
Jim O'Donnell and Moira Anne Gillespie once again, a wee quirk of fate.
I see my Family Tree project as an opportunity to put on record the generation before me and their families
because whether we like it or not, as the years go by we lose contact with each other. I have decided not to include
grandchildren of people of my generation, except for my own, that's called editors priority, that might be the
next project.
I also wanted to create a Family Tree with a difference, so decided that I would try and put faces to names where
possible rather than just writing down lots of names. I have spoken to, wrote to and met up wih a lot people to
gather information and hopefully the facts are as accurate as possible but there will obviously be mistakes, I
would welcome anyone contacting me and correcting the mistakes and anyone who can provide further
information as I have lots of people who I couldn't find out much about, my email address is

HOME TO JIMMY O'DONNELL AND ANNE GILLESPIE

RELATIONS BEFORE JIMMY & ANNE

On the O'Donnell side, if we use Jimmy (Johnny) O'Donnell as the starting point, his parents were
John O'Donnell and Anne Boyle
John O'Donnells father was John O'Donnell, he was nicknamed The Piper. I don't know Johns mothers name.
Anne Boyles father was called Dan Boyle, I don't know Annes mothers name
So using my generation as a starting point I can go back to my great, great grandfathers, John O'Donnell and Dan
Boyle on the O'Donnell side
On the Gillespie side, if we use Anne (Biddy Thiomlin) as the starting point, her parents were
Anthony (Beag) Gillespie and Bridget (Thiomlin) McBride
Anthony (Beag) Gillespies parents were Anthony Gillespie and Anne Sharkey
Bridget (Thiomlin) McBrides parents were Tim McBride and Grainne (Og) McBride
Tim McBrides father was called Manus McBride and Grainne (Og) McBrides mother was called Grainne Sharkey. I
don't know who Anthony Beag Gillespie and Anne Sharkeys parents were
So using my generation as a starting point I can go back to great, great, great grandparents,

CULACRICK & BRAADE

According to the 1857 Griffiths Valuation, John O'Donnell was renting land and a dwelling house in
Meenderrynasloe from the landlord, Francis Foster, who owned an estate at Roshine Lodge, Burtonport
In the same Griffiths Valuation, John Gillespie, Anthony Gillespie, James Gillespie and James Harley were renting
3 dwelling houses and land between them from The Marquess of Conyngham.
I don't know when the land would switch from being leased to being owned by the O'Donnell and Gillespie
families but I would be surprised if either family could afford to buy the land outright at that time. It is more
likely that they took advantage of a series of Land Acts more favourable to tenants and the formation of The Irish
State in 1922 when the land could be bought from English landlords at fair prices.
English landlords would not be welcome at this time, indeed landlords in general would be under pressure as
estates were proving more and more uneconomial to manage and they would be glad to offload the land after
1922. If anyone knows anything more about the acquisition of the lands, I would be glad to hear from you.

I can't be definite about Johnnys first family but from information on Parish records I am as certain as I can be
but am happy to hear other peoples version of events.
Johnny married Anne Boyle, strangely both his wifes were Anne Boyle and Annie Boyle, at St Marys, Belcruit on
Thursday, 28/02/1867, for the record Anne came from Meendernasloe and her fathers name was John Boyle.
According to the Parish records, they had 3 children, the first child Margaret only lived a couple of months before
she died, Anne was with her when she died. Hugh and Mary were the other children, it is thought that Anne died
when giving birth, there is a chance that Hugh and Anne were twins but I'm not definite about that, again
according to Parish records John was with Anne when she died.
I don't know what happened to Mary and Hugh but I have been told that Mary emigrated to America and Hugh was
killed in an accident in a sawmill.
Johnny married again to Annie Boyle, my great grandmother, in 1872 or 1873.
