Lead Week

Bears
By: Ashley Bradley

Rational
Rationale: I chose to do a unit about forests, and decided

to narrow it down to looking at bears for this weeks

theme. The children are very focused on things that are
right in front of them and what they have seen and what
they know. I want them to branch out and show them
something they might not normally get a chance to see
and experience. Sadie suggested that I narrow down the
unit to a theme for the week so she said bears would be a
good place to start. I want to be able to cover what they
eat, hibernation, where they live, and different types of
bears. I want to really focus on their fine motor skills this
week so a lot of my activities will be using their fine motor
skills as well as I have noticed that many of the kids could
use a little more help in that area.

Research
4 Facts I want to be able to

teach the children about

are as follows:
Types of bears
What hibernation is
That they live in the forest

or woods
Types of food bears eat
I also want to be able to

focus on the use of their

fine motor skills with many
of the activities I have
planned with the children.

Research for my topic was done using:

Pintrest:

I was able to get many

idea for art projects and fine
motor development.

is where I got some of my
information or double
checked it to make sure I
was informing my students
correctly.

cs/pattern_strip.pdf
is a site I used that had
really helpful ideas about
patterning and I was able to
get a pattering sheet to use
when I do an activity with
them to work on their weekly
goal of making patterns.

Things I will add to the

Environment
Construction Area
Lincoln Logs
Clip boards with Paper

House Area
Different Size Bowls
Teddy Bears

Art Area
Oil Pastels
Black and Brown paint

Quiet Area
Flannel pieces to do the

story of The Three Bears

Environment continued

Sensory Area
Acorns in the sensory table with muffin
tins to sort the acorns into

Science Area (we dont have)

Touch and feel boxes
magnifying glasses
tree bark
Science books

Music Area (we dont have)

Going on a bear hunt song able for them
to play in the cd player
scarves so they can dance or drape them
around
child sized instruments to play with
Books about music and sounds of nature
or animals

Outside Area (we dont use/have allotted time

for)
They dont really have outside time only
the Kindergartners do. I would allow them
some time to be able to go over to the
playground and the park across the street
to play. I would possibly bring out
different sizes of balls or hula hoops to
play with and discuss the difference in
size just like in the three bears that we
have read.

Environment continued
Quiet/Reading Area
I will be adding

books about bears to

the area.
I will add both fiction
and non fiction
books.
I will also add books
throughout the room
into different areas
as well.
