Students will be able to interpret and compare and contrast a ballad using a philosophical
approach

Assessment Evidence: Instruction and Formative Assessment Plan

I will know students have met the target(s) if:
Prior to the discussion, students will read the ballads, followed by the teaching reading
the ballads aloud. Once finished, in small groups, students will complete a Venn diagram to
compare and contrast the two ballads. However, to accomplish the Philosophy for Children
approach, instead of writing statements in the Venn diagram, students are expected to ask
questions.

The formative assessment will be done throughout the lesson to observe whether students
are responding to the ballad in a philosophical approach. The discussion will ensue based on the
questions they wrote in their Venn diagrams regarding the ballads. Hopefully, students
questions are concerning deeper meanings and ignite receptive discussion. Once the discussion
is finished, my co-teacher and I will explain what exactly a ballad is and its origins.
At the end of the lesson, students will be asked to answer a few questions on a google
form. This assessment will allow my co-teacher and me to see if the students have any more
questions concerning the ballads. During this assessment, students will also have the opportunity
to provide us with what they believe the ballads are about and to compare and contrast.
Materials/Resources/Digital Media Needed:

Song (Ballad) lyrics

Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton

Coal Miners Daughter by Loretta Lynn

Smart Board

Google Forms (Students ipads)

Learning Activities Formative Assessment:

The Venn diagram acts as a pre activity to ignite student thinking and engagement. Once
students have completed their Venn diagrams, a discussion will begin. This will serve as a place
for students to engross in questions they wrote on their diagrams and produce discussion among
classmates, hopefully generating further enquiring and thinking. As the post assessment,
students will answer a Google form asking students what a ballad is and their overall
interpretation of the ballads.
