Name of Activity:

Help Me Up
Prerequisites:
Students should know how to play rock-paper-scissors, how to flee and
dodge, and different locomotor movements.
Suggested Grade Level:
K-6
Materials/Equipment needed:
CD Player
Description of Instant Activity:

Explain to students that when the music starts, they are to start
jogging throughout the gym avoiding collisions with their peers.
When the teacher gives a signal (clap hands, whistle, etc.) the
students must pair up with someone close to them and play rockpaper-scissors.
o It is the teachers discretion as to how long the students jog or
perform a locomotor movement, but I would generally go
about 30 seconds.
The person who loses rock-paper-scissors will sit down while the
winner can continue moving through the space.
o The winner will be instructed to find another way to move
besides jogging.
While the winners of the first round of rock-paper-scissors are
moving they can help someone up who is sitting by offering them a
hand and saying their name.
o They cannot help the same person they played in the first
round
Pretty soon every one has been helped up and now everyone is
back moving a different way while the music continues to play.
The teacher then gives the signal again and the students play rockpaper-scissors with a new person.
The loser sits down while the winner moves in a new way
throughout the gym.
Again, a friend will help all those that are sitting up and they must
find a new way to move.
This process goes as long as the teacher wants it to.

Variations/Modifications:

After being helped up the person being helped up must say thank
you and the name of the person that helped them.

Give each player a die and instead of playing rock-paper-scissors

they can each roll their die the person with the smaller number
sits.
Physically disabled students could give others a high-five instead of
helping them up off the ground.
