OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Develop Number Sense

1. Demonstrate an understanding of powers with integral bases (excluding
base 0) and whole number exponents by:
Representing repeated multiplication, using powers.
Using patterns to show that a power with an exponent of zero is equal to
one.
Solving problems involving powers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Show how to represent powers with integral bases in different forms.
2. Show how to solve problems with powers.
3. Show how to use patterns to represent a power with an exponent of zero.

have let the students choose if they want to work

in partners or individually. They must all answer
the question that is present on the board.
As students are answering the question walk
around the classroom make sure that students
are doing it and understanding the question that
is being asked. Keep an eye on the clock so you
dont go over time.
Super Powers
Go over the rules of super powers that will be up
on the board.

Rules:
1. Grab a piece of paper and put your name on the top.
2. You will write out your power in exponential form (34) and
standard form (81).
3. Deal out the whole deck to everyone in your group.
4. On each turn, draw two cards from your hand.

20 Minutes

5. Form a power with your cards, using one number as the base
and one number as the exponent.
6. Calculate the value of your power. Use a calculator to check
your answer. Put this work down on your piece of paper.
7. The player with the greater power on each turn wins all the
cards.

Activity/Activities

Let them play the game with their groups that

are on the smartboard presentation.
Make sure that the rules are very clear and that the students
understand them before they get into their groups. Get the first
person in each group to come up the front of the class and grab
a deck of cards. Make sure that students grab their piece of
paper and write their name on their paper first.
Give the students that need extra time to work
on their assignment to work on their assignment.
Once they are done they can hand it in and have
flex dismal after they hand in their exit slip.
Walk around to make sure that students are
working and that they understand what the
assignment is asking them.
Closure
The exit slip will help consolidate their learning.
