"Becoming A Writer" Q4S&D

Summer Stehmeier

1. Baker makes good use of traditional expressions, repetition of words and

ideas, and pronoun references in paragraph 1 and 2. Carefully reread the
paragraphs, and identify where he employs these techniques.
Baker uses the technique of repetition in paragraphs 1 and 2 when he describes Mr.
Feagle. Baker uses this technique to over exaggerate how proper and serious Mr.
Feagle truly is. By saying prim so many times it makes us as readers able to actually
imagine how proper he is.
2. Examine the transitions Baker uses between paragraphs from paragraph 4 to
the end of the essay. Explain how these transitions work to make the
paragraph flow from one to another.
These transitions help the essay flow by making sure the first sentence of the
sentence following the end of the preceding sentence match. With such smooth
transitions it helps the reader be able to follow easier.
3. How does Baker describe his English teacher, Mr. Feagle, in the second
paragraph? Why does he repeat the word prim throughout the paragraph?
Why is the vivid description important to the essay as a whole?
Baker describes Mr. Feagle as prim. The overuse of this word helps us understand
how proper Mr. Feagle is. This image of Mr. Feagle is important because when he
reads Baker's essay at the end we can see how much he enjoys English.
4. What does Baker write about in his informal essay for Mr. Feagle? Why does
he write about this subject? Why doesn't he want to turn the essay in?
Baker writes about how to eat pasta, and how to enjoy the pasta. Baker talks about
the atmosphere of where he was eating, the warmth of the food, and how much he
enjoyed eating. At first, Baker wrote about just a boring topic, because it was what
the requirements asked for. Baker got so consumed in writing about what he wanted
to he ran out of time to write the actual essay. He was scared to turn in his "playful"
essay because he didn't want it to get rejected by Mr. Feagle.
5. What door does Mr. Feagle open for Baker? Why is Baker reluctant to pursue
the opportunity?
Mr. Feagle opens the opportunity of writing as a career for Baker. Baker enjoyed
writing about his feelings and being able to express himself freely, so Mr. Fragile
opening this door for Baker, made Baker excited for this new found opportunity.
