Teaching Models: student-centered, indirect instruction
Objectives: Students will be able to demonstrate understanding in who, what, where, when, why
and how by correctly filling out corresponding worksheets after participating in a class reading
and a related activity/game.
Materials and Technology Resources: Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed book and corresponding
worksheet. Naked Mole Rat Extension worksheet. 6 inflatable balls with "who, what, where,
when, and why" written on them. ELMO projector.
Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement:

Students will be shown the book.

They will be asked what the book may be about based on the title.

Students will be given the Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed worksheet face
down.

Students will be instructed not to flip it over.

Students will ask if they know what the "5 W's" mean in reading.

b. Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:

Students will be instructed on what the "5 W's" in reading mean if they need
help.

Students will raise "5" and place it on the blank side of the worksheet

Students will be instructed to trace their hand.

They will label each finger to represent each word.

Students will say along with me the "5 W's"

Students will flip paper over.

When parts of the story, such as who come along, reading will be paused to
talk about the answer to our question from our worksheet.

Students will complete their worksheet by the time the book ends.

Students will be given an inflatable ball with the 5 Ws written on it.

In their table groups, students will toss each other the ball and whatever word
the right thumb touches/is closest to, the students will recall what it is.
(i.e. Who: who the story is about).

c. Closure:

Answers from the story will be discussed as a class by raise of hands after
activity.

Students will turn their worksheet in for completion grade.

d. Extension:

Students will be asked to reflect on a time they felt they were "different" from
everyone else via a take-home worksheet.

Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:

Students will be read the book as a class to assist diverse learners.

Students will be paired up in their small table groups for to assist diverse
learners.
