Time Management Lesson Plan

Date:

Activity: Learn how to record and organize assignments in student planner and effectively manage
time.
Grade(s): 6th through 8th

Learning Objective(s):
1. The student will be able to effectively record assignments in their school agenda/planner.
2. The student will be able to plan a daily study/homework schedule.
3. The student will be able to plan a weekly study/homework schedule.
Materials: Chalkboard/whiteboard and writing implement; agenda page handout; daily schedule
worksheet; weekly schedule worksheet; sample student schedule

Perception Data: Exit slip: Identify 3 things you include when copying an assignment into your planner.
Identify one way that planning your day can be helpful. Identify one way that planning your week can be
helpful. What is one thing you gain from managing your time?
Outcome Data: Pre- and post-lesson surveys for teachers to indicate number of students who
habitually dont turn in assignments or hand them in late after being reminded.
Follow Up: Work with students identified by teachers as having poor organizational and/or time
management skills on a more individual level (ie. daily check-ins for recording assignments, what is due
tomorrow, when will you do it, homework log for parents to sign)

Time Management Lesson Plan


Procedure:
1. Write 4-5 sample assignments and due dates on the chalkboard/whiteboard.
2. Distribute agenda page handout.
3. Model how to record the first sample assignment in agenda:
Ask: What information do we need to include?
What is the assignment? What page numbers/questions? What class is this for? What supplies
will I need? When is it due?
4. Have students record other sample assignments on agenda page.
5. Check for understanding.
6. Have a class discussion about what time-management is and why it is important.

7. Divide students in to groups of 3-4. Distribute daily schedule handout and sample student schedule.
8. Assign a day of the week to each group. Students work in groups to complete a daily schedule.
What commitments does the student have? (school, extracurricular activities, family obligations,
volunteering, etc.)
When does the student wake-up and go to sleep? Eat?
When does the student study/do homework?
When does the student have downtime?
9. Discuss process as a class.
How do you schedule time?
Do you finish your homework?
Do you have downtime?
How much sleep do you get?
What can we learn from writing down our schedule?
10. Distribute weekly schedule handout.
11. Students complete weekly schedule using sample student schedule.
When should the student start studying or working on a project?
12. Discuss process as a class.
Not everyone will need the same amount of time to finish an assignment discover how you
work best!
13. Provide students with extra daily/weekly schedules and/or a link so they can access them later.
14. If time allows, discuss scheduling phone apps and/or online resources.
