Activity

1. Focus and Review

Description of Activities and Setting


We will start off by watching YouTube video songs on the SmartBoard about
the following shapes: circle, square, and triangle to capture the students
attention on the subject.
I will then ask the class, can anyone name a shape? Does anyone know an
object in real life or around you that is the shape you named?

2. Statement of Objective
for Student

We are going to learn some new shapes today and how the names of the
shapes remain the same even if the size or orientation changes.
Okay class, today we are going to be learning about the following shapes:
circles, squares, and triangles and how they are different from one another.
The first shape we are going to talk about is a circle. (Teacher pulls up a
picture of a circle on the SmartBoard) A circle has 0 corners and 1 side. A
circle is round. Teacher will give some examples of circles on the
SmartBoard. Teacher will get out play dough for activity. Teacher will show
class how to make a cut out circles in different sizes and explain that even
though one is big and one is small they are both still circles.

3. Teacher Input

The next shape we will go over will be the square. (Teacher pulls up a picture
of a square on the SmartBoard) A square has 4 equal sides and every corner
makes a right angle. Teacher will give some examples of squares on the
SmartBoard. Teacher will show class how to make a cut out square in
different sizes and explain that even though one is big and one is small they
are both still squares.
The last shape we will go over will be the triangle. (Teacher pulls up a picture
of a triangle on the SmartBoard) A triangle has 3 sides and 3 angles that equal
180. Teacher will give some examples of triangles on the SmartBoard.
Teacher will show class how to make a cut out triangle in different sizes and
explain that even though one is big and one is small they are both still

triangles. The teacher will then ask if the class has any additional questions
about the shapes we just learned about. They will also ask the class if they
have an understanding of the shapes. (CFU)

4. Guided Practice

Now students will be given time to explore and make their own shapes. They
will work in pairs to make two of each shape we learned about. One shape
will be big and one will be small. The teacher will call on some students,
asking them open-ended questions to further verify that they have an
understanding of the concept. (CFU) The teacher will check on each of the
pairs to make sure that they are on track and give feedback.

5. Independent Practice

The teacher will give each student a worksheet. The worksheet will have each
of the shapes that we have learned today on it. Some shapes will be on it more
than once. In order to meet the objective students must get 4 out of 5 shapes
correct. (80%) The teacher will give a specific color to circle each shape with.
(Ex: blue for circles, red for squares, and yellow for triangles)

6. Assessment Methods of
all objectives/skills:

The students will be assessed in guided practice, by the teacher, who will be walking
around and making sure each group of students understands the concept by asking
appropriate questions. (CFU) In independent practice the students will be assessed on
knowing the shapes and must get at least 80% correct to have an understanding of the
lesson plan.

7. Closure

Okay class, so what did we learn about today? Thats right shapes. What
shapes did we learn about today? Thats right circles, squares, and triangles.
Ask the students open-ended questions about the shapes that were learned
today. Make sure they are left with a clear understanding of the shapes.

all objectives/skills:

Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations:


Modifications and accommodations are for a student
with ADHD and include: allowing frequent breaks
throughout the class period, keep student in front of the
class during teaching time, check on progress more
frequently than other students in class.

Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations:


This student will be given more time to complete tasks at hand
and checked on more frequently to make sure that the student
stays on task with classwork.
