Who, What, Where,
When, and Why
Introducing a story.
-Teacher will introduce
unit of Narratives by
sharing a personal story
and assess students ability
to identify the different
parts of a narrative and
organizing the sequence of
events.
-Additional stories/
books may be shared/read
Hear, Taste, Smell, See
and Feel Sensory
language.
-Now that narratives are
in the first draft stage, the
Teacher will remind
students of the impressive
effects of incorporating the
5 senses into a narrative to
better describe the
characters/setting.
-Experimentation with
assigning different
emotions to aspects of the
narrative (i.e. angry:
whipping wind, joyful:
whistling wind, sad: biting
wind)

Wednesday
Initially, Eventually, and
In the end Transitions.
-Teacher will explain the
function of a transition
after reading a book
illustrating this concept,
then help students
participate in a sentencemaking activity.

Friday
Say what?! Dialogue.
-Teacher will introduce
the differences between
external and internal
dialogue and students will
participate in activity to
construct the different
forms.
-See attached Lesson
Plan

Wrap it up Conclusions.
-Teacher will explain the
purpose and structure of a
conclusion in a narrative;
demonstration of authors
accomplishment, relates
back to introduction,
provides reader with sense
of closure.
-Examples of
conclusions may be shared
from literature to show
effective conclusions and
different options available
for students to use.

Revision Activity: Book


Club Read-Around
-Teacher will assign
students to several small
groups of 6. Each student
will be given a number of
1-6. Student 1 will read
first their narrative. While
listening, student 2 will
note the different parts of
a story (who, where,
when, etc.), student 3 will
note uses of transitions
(then, before, during),
student 4 will note uses of
dialogue (internal v.
external), student 5 will
note uses of the 5 senses,
and student 6 will note the
effectiveness of the
conclusion.
-Feedback will be given
after each reading and all
students will have a
chance to read aloud their
narrative in their small
book club group.
