Observation

Lesson Plan
Name: Basma Abdulla Level: 1
Time: 1 hour 50 minutes
st
Date: 21 November, 2015
Description of class:
Our class is a group of 10 Level 1 students in a Foundations class. Students in this
class are of mixed motivation levels. All students in this class are level 1 repeaters,
so most of the motivation is high for them to pass, although they do have quite
some negative feelings about repeating.
The class meets three times a week for 1 hour and 50 minute sessions. We mostly
use iPads and the projector for activities, and the whiteboard for presenting tasks
and writing out grammar and vocabulary points. 2 classes a week are for covering
topic and grammar points, and the 3rd class is for writing drafts and independent
practice on Achieve 3000.
Since this is a repeat of level 1, we are only using supplemental material rather
than repeating the book.
Main aim(s):
By the end of the lesson students will be able to use specific expressions to write
facts about a popular dish.
We will practice:
- Collocations
- Subject-verb-object
- Present simple
Timetable fit with previous lesson & lesson following the observation
This lesson is the second class of the week. Before this lesson, students have
already reviewed techniques for thinking about a topic, using words like always,
usually, often, etc., interviewing partners, and completing articles using picture
notes. Following this lesson, we will be writing our first and second drafts on
writing facts about the lifestyle of a student in their class.

Anticipated problems and solutions:

Timing might be an issue since they do have some mixed abilities when it
comes to grammar. Solution: presenting grammar points clearly before
giving them the practice, using a timer, and allowing for partner and group
check
Some directions for activities are not clear. Solution: I will ask students to
explain what the activity means, and give a model answer before permitting
them to do independent work
Use of Arabic as it is easier for them to communicate that way and easier for
me to respond. Solution: put a no Arabic poster and try to have them repeat
their questions correctly after me. Play a game to see who breaks and uses
Arabic first.
Presumed knowledge of students:
At this level students already know basic grammar points like nouns and verbs and
singular and plural nouns. They have learned to use personal pronouns and
possessives.
Personal aims: (Remember this is about you e.g. to cut down on TTT, to improve my
instructions, to check concept thoroughly, to improve my whiteboard work etc.)
-Working on rapport in English only
-Improving my monitoring of students
