Here at UTEP there is a giant discourse community with even more within itself. The
main community includes UTEP as a whole body such as students, teachers, and staff. Writing is
a means of communication throughout the community and also a big part of assignments and
study material for the students success. Medias and genres used are blackboard, emails,
scholarly articles, and essays; the topics communicated are of science, English, art, and so much
more. Other topics come in the form of a syllabus which keeps guide lines and rules clear
between teacher and student the syllabus informs you on which books to get for you class and
also policies on being late to class and absences. Being punctual and knowing the campus is vital
to UTEP life incoming freshmen may not know where specific parts of the campus are located
such as the union, UGLC, and bell hall these names should be known for good punctuation for
class. Becoming a part of this discourse community you must have a high school diploma or
GED to apply and get your future started.
Attending school you must have a source of income Saber Tooth Food Company is a
locally owned business located close to the university on Mesa Street. Entering Saber Tooth
filling out an application and getting interviewed by management is required. Another
requirement searched for is restaurant experience the job needs employees who already know
conventions of how a restaurant should be operated. Waiters must have proper yet friendly
business etiquette with customers, and the crew (Cooks/Dishwashers) must keep a certain pace to
send out food and clean dishes throughout the restaurant. Topics communicated are via email
about our weekly performances and how operations are going. Other types of genres used are
food order receipts, inventory sheets, and weekly schedules. Cooks must know names and the

recipes for dishes that are printed on the receipts such as a dessert dish named the Elvis: Deep
fried peanut butter and jelly with bananas and bacon topped off with whip cream, ice cream, and
strawberries. (Personal favorite!) When the cooks do not prepare dishes right the through put
slows down and the main objective of satisfying the customer will fail. The customer is crucial
to this discourse community when the guidelines were set they were intended towards their
approval.
As Saber Tooth Food Company grows the skateboard community is another expanding
group with members of all ages, shapes, and sizes, Easiest way to becoming apart is to simply
own a skateboard. The audience is everyone the mission is to ignite interests into skateboarding.
There are no guidelines within this community but to learn and develop your style on a board
and ride anything and everything possible. The language of skateboarding is vast and unique
from names of obstacles to trick names. Someone entering the skateboard world for the first time
it could be experienced as a foreign country no clue of anything. An obstacle referred to as vert is
a ramp that is shaped to send you up a vertical wall which can be commonly found in empty
pools which lets you defy gravity at its best. Genres used in the community include magazine
articles, videos, and photography; this entire media is used to learn tricks and how to build
obstacles with every day or professional items. The use of videos can be searched on YouTube
such has trick tips these videos help skaters fix form and learn completely new tricks. The main
purpose of skateboarding is to learn from your falls and teach others with fellow skateboarders
pushing each other it pushes the whole community forward.
In this last community you must be born in or like the skateboarders have close
connections and bonds with each other. Friends and relatives are the audience of this community
the main purpose and guidelines are to simply support one another it keeps everything well

balanced in everyones lives. Staying connected is key for this community which in present time
there are so many Medias that can be used to do just that such as the social media and cell
phones. On these we have our own language which everyone should know by now such as
laughing out loud LOL. These medias are not the most important thing for this environment
but face time and constant visitation is outstanding for these relationships.
