Title: Refraction
Essential Question: What is refraction?
Standards: 5.2.6.C.1 Light can be absorbed, redirected, bounced back
or allowed to pass through. The path of reflected or refracted light can
be predicted.
2-PS1-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify
different kinds of materials by their observable properties.
Learning Objectives:

Assessments:

Students will be able to

understand what light is as
well as the types of light.

Students will categorize objects as

either refraction or reflection
depending on their characteristics.

Materials:
Cups
Plastic Spoon
Glass Marble
CD
activity sheet
Posterboard
science journal
Prior Knowledge: Students know that light behaves in different ways
and one of those behaviors is reflection.
Lesson Beginning: The teacher will explain that light behaves in
different ways. The students previously learned about reflection, and
know the teacher will introduce the idea of refraction. The teacher will
provide examples for refraction. The teacher will use the analogy of a
person running through a field for reflection, and a person running
through mud for refraction.
Instructional Plan: Students will be split into four groups and each
group will be given materials that they have to categorize as either
being reflective or refractive. The students will be given an activity
sheet to record their findings. For reflection: glass of water, mirror, cd-shiny objects. For refraction: plastic spoon, glass marble, pencil in

water. (The pencil appears to be bent or broken due to refraction of the

light coming from the pencil to our eyes. The light is traveling through
the water and then the air. When the light hits the air at an angle it
changes direction slightly. The students will determine if the materials
reflect or refract the light (activity sheet for their answers). After
categorizing if the materials reflect or refract, they will then go on a
hunt around the room, finding two additional objects for the two
behaviors of light.
Classroom Management: Students will be given instructions when
to move from their desk to the carpet. If the students are being
disruptive the teacher will stop and ring the chime. The teacher will
silently wait until everyone in the room is silent and paying attention.
The teacher will ask them how second graders should be acting. The
teacher will also ask the students the principle usually says when he
wants their attention.
Transitions: The students will be called to the carpet by tables and
back to their desks the same way.
Closure: As a class, students will share their findings. The students
will also record in their science journals 2-3 things they have learned
during the lesson.
