Because of the number of years that volunteering took place, these men held an
important value within the community

The Great Fire:

The great fire stroke out on August 3, 1873 in the Hurgren and Shindler furniture shop
Burned a total of twenty-two blocks due to the failure of the bell being heard in the
Willamette Engine Company #1
New bell was ordered and the volunteer work for the Fire Department came to an end

Adam Augustus Waterford:

Adam Augustus Waterford was the first black firefighter hired by the Fire Bureau
(1890-1895)
He is buried at the Lone Fir Cemetery in block 26 but does not hold a headstone
Group of students from Madison High School took a Portland History class which led
them to find out about Waterfords lack of recognition and decided to get donations
and make him a headstone
