Category of Effects.

Hi, name is Mathias Hernandez, I am form Lima, Peru, and so far, loving this class!. Today I am
going to take sometime to write about one of my favorite subjects which is Effects. I say favorite
because in my point of view it is the way us musicians / producers, give that extra little touch to
music which makes it finally great to listen.

Effects are basically the way to transform or distort the original Audio signal analogically or
digitally. Analogue effects can be found as actual pieces of hardware which are connected to the
inserts of mixers via special cables and digital effects are found usually in DAWS. the concept of
effects is basically the same in both.
There are three main types of effects:
- Dynamic Effects
- Delay Effects
- Filter Effects.

We are now going to look at each type of effects with examples in Logic Pro X.

Dynamic effects.
These type of effect controls the amplitude of the audio signal. In the daw, we can find this
under the Audio FX space in the channel strip:

In Dynamic Effects we can find Compressors, Limiters, Expanders and Noise Gates. Now these
four are the main types found under Dynamic Effects, however there are a lot of different types
of compressors, limiters or expanders to, but what makes them similar is that all of them control
amplitud characteristics of the Audio signal.

Delay Effects
These type of effects control propagation qualities of the audio signals, again in the Daw we can
find them in the Audio FX space of the channel strip.

In Delay Effects we can find Reverbs, Delays, Phasers, Flangers and Choruses. Again, there
are several of these within a DAW.

Filter Effects
These type of effects control timbre of the audio signal:

In these type of effects we can find High Pass Filters, Low Pass Filters, Band Pass Filters and
several types of EQs.

We say that these are three main types, because of the properties they control, however there
are some hybrid types of effects (control several of the three main parameters) as Distortion
effects or modulator effects.
In Conclusion, we can say that effects are subdivided into three main categories, following the
properties of sound. Effects that control Amplitud, Propagation and Timbre, however there are
probably an infinite possibility in combination and creation of the effects following the
manipulation of the main parameters of sound.
Hope you enjoyed this!
