Ch. 10 Assignment
Goals:
Effective learning in a classroom would be impossible without a compelling classroom
management philosophy. The components of class management include planning, procedures,
class rules, involving parents and overall, a positive learning environment. All aspects of
classroom management largely depend on the teacher and his or her teaching style. My
classroom management philosophy beings with the idea that a classroom should consist of a safe
learning environment, for both the students and teacher. I would want my students to feel they
are in a productive and positive environment where they can have fun and excel in their learning.
How I will create a productive learning environment:
I would create and maintain a positive culture and climate within my classroom with a
variety of different techniques. First of all, I would strive to learn about my students as much as I
could. I believe its impactful when you speak to your students and actually know something
about them and refer to them by name. Learning students names that first week of school will
establish a good relationship between the teacher and the student. I would begin every class
discussing events going on around the school and asking the students what is new in their lifes. I
also like the idea of a quote board, this would consist of a board of intelligent sayings from
former and present students. Adding something like this to the classroom would allow students to
understand they are an important factor to the classroom. I would also ask my students their
opinions on what is being done in the class, this would establish that each student has a voice in
the room, and again letting them know they are important to the class.
I believe it's important to encourage students to take learner ownership over their school
work. I would first discuss with the students how important it is to get their assignments done
because they will have a big impact on their grade. On certain assignments I would be okay with
going over the correct answers with them to ensure they are fully understanding the content. If an
assignment is due and less than half of my class completed the work, I would offer extra credit to
those students who completed the assignment on time, along with another reward and extend the
deadline a couple more days for the students who did not turn in the assignment.
Maximizing your time in the classroom is very important, especially for teachers in
middle and high schools. I would not want to be one of those teachers that lectures the whole 90
minutes students are in class. I would want to lecture for no longer than 30-40 minutes because I
wouldn't want my students to lose interest in the topic being discussed. Proceeding the lecture, I
would give students about 20 minutes to work on the assigned works and then set aside the
remainder of class time for student- teacher discussion and for any questions the students may
have for next classs homework. Although you can never exactly plan out how your day of
teaching will go, I think it would be beneficial to practice your lesson a day before the actual
class to see where you would need to add or take time away from your session.
Keeping your students guardians knowledgeable about what is going on in class is
essential. Parents need to know what they student will be learning and should encourage students
to stay on task with their school work outside of the classroom. I would first go about explaining
to the student and the teacher what will be discussed and assigned in class through the class

syllabus. The syllabus will also include the expectations I wish my students will follow. It's
important to be consistent with what is stated in the syllabus to create credibility and keep both
students and their parents informed. I would also communicate with my students parents by
sending out emails, or sending messages through the schools website, such as Skyward. I would
post about assignments that are coming up and would even message the parents about their
childs academic progress, whether it be positive or negative.
Interventions:
I would use interventions in the classroom to increase positive behavior and decrease, or
even eliminate negative and unwanted actions executed by students. If students are acting out
and being disruptive while Im lecturing, I would first decrease their participation points for the
day. If these actions continued, and the student was loudly talking to other students, I would
threaten to create a seating chart which would separate the distracting students. If the actions
proceeded, I would send them out of the classroom and speak to them outside and discuss their
behavior. By doing this, that students and the students left back in the class are missing out on
the lesson, for this reason, I would keep my conversation with the disruptive student short and to
the point so we could both get back to the classroom. If bigger problems presented themselves, I
would first try to sort things out with the student, but if that didn't work, I would contact
administrators and ask them to help with the issue. As far as promoting positive behavior in the
classroom, I think offering extra credit or giving out treats would encourage students to act
appropriately.
