Subject: Discourse Community Project

Dear: RWS 1301

The University of Texas at El Paso its been know, and even recognized to be the number
one mobility university in the country by Washington Monthly college rankings. This
means that there is a lot of different races, cultures, languages, skin color, and types of
names. This would also mean that there are many different discourse communities. A
discourse Community is a set of people who share the same type of debate and the same
way of communicating with each other.
The different types of discourse communities that I wrote about where about my family,
church, school, and work. Before I wrote my essay, I build a map first, and the map had
four categories per community. On each community I had to talk about how to join
certain community, about different conventions that were used, the genre on which the
people communicated on that community, and the topics that where always talked about.
Than after I wrote the essay with evidence supporting why I addressed people differently
on each community. When being on school, or at work, I always need to be respectful.
Joining this types of communities, I needed to apply to them, and get interviewed. On this
types of communities I always needs to be formal, addressing people in a proper way, on
an e-mail, a report, or an essay. The way that I communicated on this communities was
mostly by e-mail.
The other two types of communities that I choose to speak about where friends/family,
and church. Been on this communities, makes me feel more comfortable, more free, and
to be able to be less formal. To join the community of my family, is very simply, but in
some cases very exclusive, one needs to be born in to the family. The way I get to speak
to my family is very relaxing, is doesnt have to be formal, because they are people I get
along with very well. The way we communicate is by social media, phone, family
dinners, and holidays. The topics that are mostly speak about are about our family,
current events. The last community that I choose is my church. For one to join a church,
one just needs to attend one constantly. The way one speaks in a church can be difficult
sometimes. For one to address the pastor, or an elder, one needs to be very careful, and
very respectful. However, I can speak very freely to my mates at the youth group. We
mostly communicate by social media, and the topics we all speak about is mostly about
church, and current events.
Writing about discourse communities, can teach one person a lot, it sure did thought me
plenty. Writing about this types of things, makes one thing about how there community
really is different from the others. One gets to learn about how, and why we address
people a certain way. This is very important at UTEP, one encounters a lot of people
with different cultures on campus, and one always needs to know that we dont all come
from the same type of community.
Sincerely,
David Yeverino
