Brochure Design Script

Group Decisions
Our group of five chose the categories of food, religion,
architecture, government and weapons, and our target
audience is elementary school children. Because we de-
signed the brochure for children, we went with a smaller
template of 6” X 6”, with a tri-fold, 6 panel design. The
choice to create the brochure for young children influ-
enced most of the design decisions. We attempted to
speak the “visual language” (1) of a child. Each of our
brochures have the same “Mayan civilization 4 kids” logo
to keep consistent. The font on the cover is very child ori-
ented, each letter having a different color, sloppily drawn
on, off centered, with a crayon like drawing of a sun and
a Mayan temple in the background. We added a white
square background with a black border and grey line of
scribble between the square and border.

After trying various pictures and backgrounds for our

back cover, the brochure seemed a bit too cluttered
and busy, so our group decided to keep the back cover
simple with a white background. (it appears black here
after cutting and pasting for some reason)The head-
ing reads “for more fun,” and underneath you will see
reference to the other Mayan exhibit brochure topics.
This back cover design, for the most part, remains the
same in each group member’s design. The information
on the bottom includes the dates and times when the
exhibit will be held, a logo for the museum where the
exhibition is taking place (The American Museum of
Natural History), and also the museum’s information,
the phone number and web address.

For the inside of the brochure, the group utilized a photo of ancient Mayan hieroglyphic stone or cave
etchings as a background image. We added a dark brown border for contrast. We chose to stick with sandy,
earth tones to remain consistent with the Mayan culture theme.
