Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and
symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you
have?
Lesson objective:

Assessment:

Students will correctly determine the value of

at least three different sets of coins by counting
by fives and then adding ones.

Teacher will review student worksheets.

5+ correct mastered
3-4 correct capable
< 3 correct reteach

Opening:
We will practice skip counting by fives up to 100 as a class. Students will tap their finger on
their desk to keep track of the numbers.
The teacher will then draw a short vertical line on the board and tell the class it is worth 5. The
teacher will draw different amounts of lines on the board and the students will count by fives to
get the total.
The teacher will then draw four lines. The students will count to 20. The teacher will add a
small dot. The dot is worth one. The teacher will model counting to 20 by fives and then adding
one (21). They will do another example as a class. The teacher will draw a few more examples
for students to do in their heads and then determine the correct answers as a class.
Procedure:
The teacher will project the hairy money reference sheet on the board. The class will work
together to determine how many hairs to put on each coin. Dont forget the penny is bald! (He
gets a dot worth one). The teacher will draw the correct hairs on the smartboard and then give
each student a copy of the projectable so they can make their own reference sheet.
When each student has finished their reference sheet, total the amount of all the coins on that
sheet by counting up by fives. Make sure you count the penny last!

The teacher will show several different groups of coins on the smartboard starting with two or
three coins and then adding on. The class will work together to first add the correct amount of
hairs to each coin. Then count up by fives until you reach pennies. Add the ones.
Students will all receive the same self-check worksheet and file folder. Students must use their
reference sheets to add hairs or dots to the money at the top of the sheet first! Students will
complete the worksheet and then check to see if their answers match the answer key in the file
folder. The teacher will be walking around to check for understanding at this point.
Students who self-checked at 100% and got the approval from a teacher may move on to
worksheet L.
Students who self-checked at less than 100% will receive assistance from a teacher and then
move to worksheet W.
Tiered by complexity:
Tier 1: Worksheet W. This sheet will have no more than six coins to total.
Tier 2: Worksheet L. This sheet will have up to twelve coins to total.
Closure: Students will tuck their completed sheets into the file folders. The teacher will review
the lesson from today and then offer a challenge. For the challenge, students will sit in a circle
on the floor. We are going to practice counting by fives up to 200. The teacher will start by
saying the first 5. She will pass a ball to a student in the circle who will say 10. That
student will pass the ball to his neighbor who will say 15. and so on until the students reach
200. To increase the challenge, the students can count backwards, start at higher numbers, or
practice adding in ones.
The teacher will say: Today we practiced counting coins up to 100 cents. We know how to
write these values by writing the number and putting a cents sign after it. Tomorrow we will
practice counting coins that add up to more than 100 cents! Who knows what is equal to 100
cents? (one dollar). We are going to expand our knowledge by counting past a dollar and
learning a new way to write our value using dollar signs.
Teacher will hang up the hairy money poster in the room.
