An oncologist is a trained physician in the study, management, and treatment cancer. The
majority of oncologist are trained in subspecialties of the profession such as certain types of
cancers or the type of patient with which they deal. Students must first earn a bachelors degree
including required courses in general biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, mathematics, and
physics. Next they should attend medical school which is usually a four year program including
an internship and residency pertaining to dealing with cancer patients. Once becoming a
physician they must become certified in internal medicine and undergo periodic reexaminations
to maintain certification. Oncologist determine the best procedures to be followed after

examination of the patient is completed and the type and extent of the cancer is confirmed. This
article provides the job description of oncologist.

Loss." Death Studies 37.10 (2013): 937-952. Religion and Philosophy Collection. Web.

Health care professionals that care for critically ill and terminal patients may develop
grief reactions. There are many reasons health care professionals report feeling grief such as the
death of patients they were close with, patients who were unsuccessfully cured, and young
patients. Health care professionals in oncology settings can develop very negative reactions
when their emotions are left unmanaged. Although death and loss are a constant part of the
oncology setting there are no guidelines recommending how to cope. Some oncologist attend
funerals, meet with family members, call the bereaved family, and sometimes send condolence
cards. In order to cope with continual loss oncologist turn to social support, doing something
active, and even faith. There may not be an official protocol for Health care professionals to cope
but this article expresses different ways oncologist have adapted.

Health care professionals that work in oncology settings are at high risk of emotional
distress. Caring for patients with cancer and patients who are dying causes an emotional burden
on the oncology staff. The work environment and nature of the work influences work stress
significantly. Increased workload and low sense of control over work environment is associated
with high stress levels in oncology settings. Oncology staff are at risk of work stress and burnout
because of increasing complex cancer treatments with high demands from patients and the
downsizing of hospital services for oncology patients. A significant proportion of oncology staff
are affected by the term burnout. Staff that has been in the oncology field the longest felt a
greater sense of control over their work. Oncology staff that felt more supported had greater job
satisfaction and sense of reward. This article is crucial to my research paper because its a study
of work stress and the well-being of oncology staff.

Manochakian, Rami. "My First Year As An Oncologist." Journal Of Palliative Medicine 17.6
(2014): 636. Advanced Placement Source. Web. 10 Nov. 2015.
This professional journal describes a doctors first year as an oncologist. As an oncologist
you are the key physician to a cancer patient. There are many things you must experience firsthand that you cannot read in textbooks and medical literature, they will be learned through
simply communicating with cancer patients. Several emotions are experienced through patients
from happiness and satisfaction to sadness, sorrow, and frustration. Oncologist encounter these
emotions multiple times a day, transitioning back and forth through them. The demeanor
oncologist use to deliver bad news to patients and their family is significant, but the approach of
the conversation afterwards is even more crucial. When caring for cancer patients, palliative care
is extremely crucial and should be incorporated as early as possible. Oncologist not only treat

cancer, but also reduce any suffering during the patients treatment. This journal is important
because it describes the first-hand experience of an Oncologist.

Shuman, R. Baird, PhD. "Oncology." Salem Press Encyclopedia Of Health (2015): Research
Starters. Web. 10 Nov. 2015.
Oncology is the medical specialty that studies tumors, their causes, development, and
treatment. To become a certified oncologist they must first obtain a medical degree. A residency
of two to four years in an oncology setting is also required to obtain certification. Once
certification has been completed the oncologist must renew certification at regular intervals.
Evaluating, eliminating, and reducing malignancies is the primary goal of an oncologist. Another
main goal is offering reassurance to patients and their families and making patients as
comfortable and pain free as possible during treatments. In order to help patients and their family
cope with depression and uncertainties, oncologist refer them to mental health professionals and
social workers. Oncologist, in terminal cases, also help provide patients with hospice care to
ensure they will be taken care of either in their homes or other facilities. This article describes
the scope of the oncology medical specialty.

This study was proposed to accurately determine the current market for oncologists and
radiation oncologist services. Additionally it was initiated to predict the future supply and
demand for oncologists and radiation oncologists. The American Society of Clinical Oncology
developed a study that anticipated an increase in supply of the services provided by oncologists
and radiation oncologists. The supply and demand for oncology settings are significantly
influenced by factors such as the changes in the incidence and prevalence of cancers, population
demographics, insurance status and type, and changes in physician retirement rates and
productivity. This article is important to my research paper because it exhibits the need for
oncologist.
