Blog: Differences in the Classroom
In order to be a good educator, you must first accept the fact that each and every
individual is unique and learns differently. This means that you must cater your lesson to your
audience. During my time at Saint Matthias I had witnessed the differences between classes and
how each class was handled.
One day when I was there, I noticed a drastic differences in how each class was handled.
I experienced four different classes every day I was there. Two eighth grade classes and two
seventh grade classes. For the day I am referencing, the first class of the day was the seventh
graders. The teacher started off very stern with the class. By calling out students who werent
paying attention to the lesson, or were talking when the teacher was talking. The teacher gave out
very detailed instructions of what needed to be done. They were very stern with this seventh
grade class and had wonderful control of the classroom.
The second seventh grade class was treated vastly different. The teacher didnt call on
students who werent participating or werent paying attention, because they did not need to do
any of that! The class was vastly different than the first class. This class was focused, respectful
and followed instructions with ease. Opposed to the first seventh grade class though, the teacher
did not go in depth with the lesson as she did with the first class. The first class the teacher gave
examples for each concept. With the second seventh grade class, they called on the students
instead of the teacher giving examples.

The first eighth grade class was treated the same as the second eighth grade class. Except
for one notable difference. With the first eighth grade class the teacher sat up in the front of the
classroom and read off the slide while calling on students for examples. The second eight grade
class was much different than the first. The teacher was walking around the class during their
lesson, throwing a ball around the class to each student and learning about their students
personal interests and letting their personality shine.
I thought it was interesting how the teacher treated each class different the last. I believe
they did this because they know their audience and understand that each student is different and
unique. Sometimes the teacher had to scold a student for not having a homework assignment,
sometimes the teacher acted as a friend the students but, the teacher was very stern with each
student and did not favor a single student. No student was safe from being scolded if they were
out of line.
