Evaluation

The Brief for this module audio for multimedia was to create a library of sounds that
are relevant to the award winning movie Walle. The library was to include 80 to 100
sounds categorized into four folders.
The 4 folders are named
Dialogue
Characters
Environment
Machinery
From the 80 sounds from the library I had to pick sounds that would be suitable in a
30 second clip from the movie.
For recording the sounds, I had to use different recording techniques to achieve
these sounds. The main style I used was studio recording where I recorded a block
of 40 minutes of me hitting different objects and creating Foley work in the studio. I
used a condenser mic to record the direct sounds. This is heard in most of my
sounds such as the "cattle grid sounds" where the condenser was close enough to
pick up the high frequencies of the scrapes and bumps off a sheet of metal. I also
setup a room mic which was also a condenser mic. I placed it in the corner of the
studio room. This was too catch the room sound and I also try it as an experiment.
When finished recordig I then removed the non revenant sounds E.G background
talking from the relevant sounds and ended up with a 12 minute block of
recordings.
Another technique I used was location recording. I did this on my breaks from
college around Dundee and Perth. I was able to collect a small amount of quality
sounds due to the weather. I recording the sound using a Tascam DR 0-5 borrowed
from the college. This recorder had two condenser mic set in a omnidirectional
miking technique. This allowed for very accurate stereo miking.I was able to record
bacon sizzling from a snack van which I would later use a the sound effect "rain".

The final recording style I used was creative synthesis. This was done by using the
midi keyboard and the software daws called reason and "Cubase" supplied by the
college. I used the vst instrument to creative bird tweet and laser sounds for my
library.
From here, I processed my sounds through the software reason". I used the
software's "NNXT ADVANCED SAMPLER" to patch in my sounds and when hooked
up with the midi keyboard, it would change the key of the recording. This can be
heard in my robots sounds as when watching back to the movie without any volume
on, I pictured walle with a high pitched voice.I also used the tools available to me on
the sampler as well. This can be heard in many of my dialogue effects where I made
the dialogue in the recording by using the reverse tool. THE dialogue on its own
didnt sound right but by using the reverse tool gave it a robot effect that I used for
characters walle and the "bug" in my clip.
For a lot of the machinery sounds, and most sounds in general I put them through
the distortion effect "pulveriser demolition. This gave them a distinct gritty crunch
sound. This can be heard through my explosion where I recorded a door being
slammed and the I pitched shift it to give it a deep and slow sound then put it through
the distortion to give it a metal sound.I also added reverb to the explosion to give it
depth and the overall sound gave it a intense feeling.I tried to recreate technique
called rendering. This technique is use by " Michel chion" where sounds can convey
feelings associated with source. For example, someone falling can convey feelings of
"weight, violence and pain and I tried to recreate the technique with my sound effects
"bang".
I fixed all them individually on Cubase by adding in fades and topping and tailing
them to leave no silence in-between sounds . Once I had fixed the sounds I Exported
them at 48hz at 24 bit and as a wav file .This is industry standard format and which
allowed me to burn the files onto a CD.The library folder was burnt onto a CD that
was submitted into the drop box in the college.
I started to develop my 18 sounds for the 30 second clip.I used Cubase because it
allows me to link up the movie clip and audio together .The video with 18 relevant
sounds was uploaded to "I movie" to combine the audio and video together to make
a movie and then it was uploaded to YouTube.

Through this project I learnt how to synchronised audio clips with video more
accurately than I could before.Ive also became more knowledgeable in the software
"reason" and Cubase". This makes me efficient and confident on the software's. I
may have gained skills and knowledge through this projects but there is things I can
improve on too.Due to myself starting this project at slow pace, I didnt give myself
enough time at the end and felt rushed.I also didnt book enough study time to
experiment with more sounds.
In conclusion, I believe I completed my project at a high quality, but due to my
planning I could have produced it at a higher quality. However this project has
improved many of my multimedia and daw skills.
