Characteristics of the student whom this would be age and
learning appropriate: This book is for middle school to high school
aged students who have a social, learning, or mental disability. The
lessons in this book take issues step-by-step to best allow students to
understand the material. Activities can be easily adapted to meet the
needs and educational abilities of the student, however a reading and
writing ability of about 5th grade or higher would be ideal. He or she
needs to be able to think critically about different issues to decide how
they might best be handled.
Life Skills Activities addresses the following life skills: The
student will learn about skills for self-awareness, people skills,
academic and school skills, practical living skills, vocational skills, and
problem solving skills.
Other features of Life Skills Activities: Throughout the book, there
are a wide variety of lessons for secondary aged students to learn
valuable life skills. The majority of the lessons in this book contain a
specific objective for each lesson, brief explanation of the importance
of the skill, an introductory activity, discussion questions, an answer
key or suggested responses, extension activities, and possible
questions or activities that could be used for evaluation. Also, there are
suggested parent activities to do with their child to work on the
different skills in more real life situations. Finally, for every lesson there
is an activity page that Jossey-Bass has given permission to individual
classroom teachers to copy for classroom use.
