Semester Reflection
English 250 has impacted my writing skills in many ways. Throughout the semester I
have learned new techniques that will help me in the future. In past English classes I have found
helpful advice, but not like the advice I have received in this class. I was able to do learn from
my mistakes and incorporate other methods in my writing. I have been able to challenge myself
with new writing assignments I had never thought of. There were other assignments I had no idea
where to begin at, but was able to finish them with the help from my peers.
Writing has never been my strength in both my high school and college career. I have
struggled with grammar and my word choice when it comes to writing any essay. Although I
have been able to take feedback from both my teacher and peers to help me write better essays.
There have been some essays, for example in assignment 3, to figure out who my audience is and
to learn how to write without using I statements. It has been hard, but it is a good method to
learn since I will have to write papers like this in the future.
I have always done a better job when it comes to speaking in front of a group. There are
some things I could work on to better my presentation skills. In assignment #5, I had to present
my research essay on Immigration and Assimilation. According to the grade I got, I did a well
job with my voice infatuation and with eye contact. I could work on the movements I give while
presenting. One way I could fix this would be by not moving as much while presenting, that way

I wont present in an awkward position. This will help me with other presentations that I have to
give in future classes and in my career.
My Power-points have changed from the first presentation I gave, which was on the
organization, and my last presentation, which was on Immigration and Assimilation. On my first
presentation, I had started with a lot of words on the slides and with just one image. By my last
presentation I had learned to use key words instead of full sentences, that way I would have more
space and it would be easier for my audience to read. I tried to add two visuals, that way it
wouldnt take so much attention from the key words on the presentation. This I learned after I
gave my first presentation with my group and have incorporated the comments that my teacher
gave me into my other presentations for my other classes.
There have been many helpful strategies that I plan on taking from this class and plan to
apply to my other classes along with my career as a forensic scientist. When writing I plan on
identifying who my audience is first, since I was struggling with that in most of my essays. I will
also try to better my movements when giving a presentation and try to not speed when talking. I
will use my previous assignments as resources for my future assignments because the comments
I received were very helpful.
