Students will be asked to

demonstrate their understanding
of the five key plot elements using
a song titled The Five Elements.
They will then identify these plot
elements within the short story
Thank You Maam by Langston
Hughes. This will help them with
their future endeavor to write their
own short fiction story. They will
receive a chart that will help them
understand the five elements from
the song and dissect the five
elements from the short story by
Hughes. This can be used as an
example when they begin writing
their fiction story. Students will also
be asked to cite the quotes they
think best describe the point of the
story they are writing down. This
allows students to learn to refer
back to their text to answer
questions they may have.
