As a class we are going to use this page as a fabric study guide.
Select 3 terms from the list below. If you are not familiar with one of the fabrics, choose that one! Next to the
term write the definition/description of the particular fabric. Below the term embed a clear image of that fabric. Add
your name to each entry. Do not select a term that has already been completed. If all of the terms are defined, add
a new one at the end of the list and follow the instructions above.

fibers

fiber - The chemical substance from which fabrics are made.

natural fiber - Fibers that come from animal or plant sources.

cotton - A soft white vegetable fiber that comes from the fluffy boll of the cotton plant. (Edgar Revilla)

ramie - Strong, Soft, lustrous fiber, somewhat like linen, from the inner bark of the ramie plant. (Anne

hemp- a coarse, strong, lustrous fiber from the stem of the hemp plant (Dee

nylon - Generic fiber category established by the FTC for a manufactured fiber composed of a long

woven fabric-textile formed by weaving.(Dabin Sul)


grainline - On woven fabrics, the grain line is the warp (the longwise threads which are stretched on the loom), i.e.
the longwise direction a fabric. The weft are the threads woven across the warp. (William

warp - a term in fabric weaving, it is the set of lengthwise yarns that are held in tension on a frame or loom. The
word warp means that which is thrown across. Yarn for warp ends is usually spun. (William

weft - (also known as woof) the crosswise threads on a loom over and under which other threads (the warp) are
passed to make cloth. The yarn used for weft can usually be less strong than the warp yarn because it does not

have to be stretched on a loom in the way that warp is. (William Chan)
bias - When the lengthwise and crosswise yarns in a fabric structure are used on the diagonal. (Kelli

plain weave - The simplest woven structure, in which the warp and weft yarns intersect singly with

twill weave - basic weave characterized by diagonal wales, as in denim jean fabric. (Chey Jezreel)

knit - A fabric structure in which needles are used to form a series of interconnecting loops from one

gabardine - Tough, tightly woven fabric used to make suits, overcoats, trousers, uniforms,

seersucker - A Medium-weight fabric made with lengthwise crinkled stripes alternating with plain
woven stripes and puckering, achieved by releasing the tension at intervals on the lengthwise yarns.

velvet- is a type of woven tufted fabric in which the cut threads are evenly distributed, with a short
dense pile, giving it a distinctive feel. By extension, the word velvety means "smooth likevelvet."
