My Goal is to become a registered nurse and work in an operating room at the

Intermountain Hospital. For this assignment, I interviewed Marisabel, who is a registered

nurse and works at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah. Throughout the
interview, I began to gain more knowledge of the nursing field and what it takes to
become a registered nurse. There are many requirements and tests you have to take in
order to become a registered nurse and work at the Intermountain Hospital, including,
several years of schooling. I plan on going into the Nursing Program at Salt Lake
Community College and getting my Associate of Science in health science. After that, I
will be transferring to the University of Utah to get my Bachelors of Science in nursing.

Interview Topics
I chose Marisabel for my interview because she is a pre-op room nurse at
Intermountain Hospital and she has also worked as both an OR and ER nurse. I asked her
about how she liked being a nurse and what she believed was the best part about being a
Nurse. She said that she absolutely loves being a nurse and that all the schooling is well
worth it. Being a registered nurse is a rewarding job and at the end of the day, she
wouldnt trade it for anything. I asked her when she started as a Nurse and she told me
that she was only eighteen years old when she was working as an LPN. She worked at a
Hospital in Argentina where she was born and raised. She worked there until she was
twenty- three years old and then moved to Utah. Once she arrived in Utah, she decided
to go back to school while working with her LPN, until she got her RN. Which took her
about seven years. A day of work for a pre-op nurse like Marisabel consists of getting the
patient ready for surgery, assessing the patient, reviewing their heart and lungs, asking

them questions about their health, making sure they are ready for the surgery, hooking up
the IV and drawing their blood. Then, she has to go over all of their Medical History and
do the Patient Charting. She needs to be on top of everything, especially the medication.
Making sure that the patient is comfortable and safe at all times is extremely important.
When I asked her what the hardest thing about being a Nurse was, she stated that seeing
people pass away was the hardest. She said that she got really attached to some of her
patients and to see them pass away was hard for her. I asked Marisabel what her work
schedule was like and if she liked it. She stated that she works Monday- Friday 5:30
AM- 2PM. When I asked her about her pay, she stated she was paid well and that the
median pay for a Registered Nurse in the US is about $65,470 a year depending on which
state you live in. In addition, being able to work under pressure and in an environment
that requires you to be extremely cautious of what you are doing, is an essential part of
being a Registered Nurse. I asked her if there was anything I should know before going
into Nursing School, and she told me to just stick to it and try to get it all done while I am
young. I learned from her that I need to take risks and push myself and in the end, it will
be worth it.

Schooling Required
To get your Associate in Nursing, you need to get the Associate of Science in
Health Science, which is a two-year Nursing Program, and I will be doing that at Salt
Lake Community College. With that Degree, you will have your LPN. I want to get my
Bachelors of Science in Nursing, which means I will be doing the Nursing Program at
SLCC, then transferring to the University of Utah to get my Bachelors. You have to do a

lot of clinical hours to receive this degree in addition to doing a residency. I hope to be
finished and working at the Hospital by the time I am twenty-five years old.

Analysis of Being a Registered Nurse

Conducting this Interview helped me learn more about what being a Registered
Nurse is like and what I need to do in order to accomplish this goal. This provided me
with information about what it is like to work in the hospital setting as both a pre-op
Room Nurse and an operation room nurse. I need to work hard in school and complete
all my classes with a C grade or better so that I can get into the Nursing Program at
SLCC. I will work at a Hospital during the time I am in the Nursing Program so that I can
get more experience. After I pass all the tests for the Nursing Program I will receive my
Associates of Science in Health Science. Then, I will move on to the University of Utah
to get my Bachelors.

Self Analysis of Own interview Process

When interviewing Marisabel, I was on time and had all my questions prepared
for her. The interview went well, because it was relaxed and casual. I was able to learn a
lot about Marisbel as well as her Nursing Career. She answered all the questions I asked
her and the interview did not go over thirty minutes. She went in depth about details of
her job and other jobs that she has had as a Nurse. She knew everything about working
in an Emergency Room, -working as a pre-op nurse, operating room nurse, post-op nurse
and NICU nurse. She was able to tell me information about each job, which helped me
decide what kind of nurse I want to be. One of my strengths was that I kept the

conversation going and the questions were answered within my time limit, also I picked a
great person to interview. One drawback was that- I wished I had had more time to listen
to some of her stories about patients crazy injuries she had to help with. Overall, she
gave me all the information I needed to decide that being a Registered Nurse is the right
field for me to be in because you can go so many different directions in the nursing field.

Ultimately, this assignment was extremely useful to me, because I got the chance
to speak with Marisabel, who is a Registered Nurse at the Intermountain Hospital. I got
to learn about what a day in her position is like and how she takes care of her patients. I
learned about each step she takes when reviewing a patient before surgery and the
precautions she has to take. She told me that there is a lot of paper work and charting that
you have to complete as a Registered Nurse and any errors could cause a change in the
patients health or even death. Being a Registered Nurse is a job that demands a lot of
responsibility, and you need to be attentive at work. I wanted to know about what her
work schedule is like, and Marisabel stated the she only works on the weekdays, which is
the type of schedule I want to have. Also, I am satisfied with the yearly salary that
Registered Nurses receive. Becoming a Registered Nurse and working in the operating
room is my dream, and I will take all the necessary steps I need to in order to fulfill this
dream. I will get my Associate of Science in Health Science at SLCC in the Nursing
Program. Then, I will transfer to the University of Utah and receive my Bachelors of
Science in Nursing. Thereafter, I will apply to get a job at the Intermountain Hospital
working as a Registered Nurse in the operating room.
