    NewsomestatedinaninterviewwithTheExaminerthat,
    Iwasdisgusted1regardinga
    commentmadebysomeoneafterhisspeechforsamesexmarriage.Hewasappalled
    bytheamountofhatredfortheLGBTcommunityandaimedtorectifytheunjustactions
    imposedagainstqueers.HebeganissuinglicensesillegallyinanactofCivil
    Disobedience.Theamountofmarriagesperformedwasenormous,morethan4,000
    couplesweremarriedbeforetheCaliforniaSupremeCourtsteppedin,2 .

    Upuntil2015,samesexmarriagewasntlegalacrosstheUnitedStates,andin
    2004,itwasntlegalinCalifornia.GavinNewsomwasinspiredbythislawtoissue
    licensestosamesexcouplesinordertomakeastatementandasanactofjustice.He
    waswillingtosacrificehispoliticalcareerinordertoallowsamesexcouplestomarryin
    SanFranciscoatCityHall.Atthetime,GeorgeWBushJr.waspresidentandhewas
    vehementlyagainstsamesexmarriage.SanFranciscoisknownasaliberalcityand
    GavinNewsomwasaprogressiveman.Inthe9day3 periodbeforetheSupremeCourt
    startedtostepinontheillegalactivitytakingplace.

    TheactivitywentnationalwhentheSupremeCourtsteppedin.Newsomwas
    claimedasaheroandwaspraisedbythepublic4.Eventodayheisknownasoneofthe
    leadingadvocatesinthepoliticalsystemasanallytotheLGBT*community.He
    demonstratedpeacefulandcivildisobedienceinthefaceofinjustice.Byissuing
    marriagelicenses,hewasactingpeacefullyinthenameofbothjusticeandlove.He
    wasrecognizedbyLGBT*peopleasaheroastheytoldtheirownstories.
    Asweall
    waitedhours(many,manyhours),floristsbeganarrivingandgivingusallbouquets.
    Turnsoutstrangersfromaroundthecountrywereorderingflowerstorandomlydeliver
    tothesamesexcouplesgettingmarried.Everybodywassuddenlyfriendswith

    moneyforflowersatallthesamesexweddingstakenplaceinCityHall.Theseallies
    continuedtovoteinfavorforlegalizationofsamesexmarriage,andthoughitdidnot
    happenimmediatelyorsoonenough,itdideventuallyhappen.AndSanFranciscois
    knownforbeinganLGBThotspot.However,GavinNewsomsactionsdidheavilysway
    thepoliticalpositiononsamesexmarriage.
