The Graduate
Hot new Irish designer Mia O’Connell is launching her first

te
collection at The Design Centre this spring. She took some
time out from her hectic schedule to chat to Laura Dunne about
empowering clothes, the will to succeed and working until 2am.

After failing to be accepted into NCAD,

The
Mia O’Connell was uncertain about her
future. Luckily, the Limerick School of
Art and Design gave her her first taste of
fashion design which she has found to be
“the most natural form of expression”.
Under the guidance of her first year
tutor, fashion designer Joanne Hynes, her

ate
delicate yet edgy designs have won her
accolades from many of Ireland’s most
prestigious design awards – finalist in the
Nokia Young Designer Awards 09, the Persil
Young Designer Awards 09, the Style Awards
09 and the DIT Young Designer Awards 08 to
name but a few.

College internships included John Rocha,

Vogue, Marios Schwab, The Times, London,
and Sakina M’Sa in Paris, which
has had a particularly strong
effect on her aesthetic, a
“mixture between avant-garde
Japanese and classical European
femininity”.

ST: How did the current

collection come about?
M: After graduating in June

O
09, I was eager to find a
full-time job in fashion but
there was little available.
I began designing for a

in and around Dublin, who

told me the reactions to my work were

very positive. I didn’t want all the
hard work I had put into my graduate
collection to go to waste so I began
designing accessories first, which were
sold through Circus boutique. After
this, I felt confident enough to start
work on my collection and I held a small
launch over the summer. The reaction was
great and Eddie Shanahan and Constance
Harris were both eager to use my pieces.
I eventually signed a deal with The
Design Centre who will be stocking my
collection from February 20th 2010.

ST: Who do you design for?

M: I design for a woman who wants to be
feminine, appreciates a well-cut garment
and wants to retain a contemporary
element to their style. I want my
customers to feel empowered when they
put on my clothes, there is an element
of sexiness to my designs due to their
fit. The body is important to me but my
designs are never overly figuring hugging
as I want women to feel comfortable in
my clothes.

ST: What does a typical day involve?

M: I am currently working from a home
studio. In the morning, I cut patterns
and in the afternoon I begin sewing
before leaving the pieces in to be
finished by local dressmakers. Some

24
one to watch

days I have interviews, fabric orders

to collect, calls to make to suppliers
etc. I usually don’t finish up working
until 2am. I try to keep on top of the
business side of the label as much as I
can also. My parents are from a business
background so they have been a great
help in this area.

ST: Do you have any advice for young

designers starting out?
M: It takes a huge amount of drive. You
have to be willing to do what you ordinarily
wouldn’t if you want to succeed – I went to
the races dressed in my clothes as an exercise
in self-promotion. It was embarrassing but it
worked! Don’t give up before you’ve tried it
out. I go to work excited every day, I’m very
happy in what I do.

ST: What are your plans for

the future?
M: I intend to stay in Dublin for the
time being. I am considering a Masters
in London at some stage to take my
work further, develop greater contacts
and also have the opportunity to tutor
young designers in the future. I feel
that Dublin represents a great untapped
opportunity for young designers. If you
work hard here it is possible to make a
name for yourself. In London, everyone
wants to be a designer so it is much
harder to succeed.

ANGELA SCANLAN, Stylist

I adore wearing men’s

clothes.

The androgynous look has

always been so attractive to
me, even when I was a kid.
I was never a girly girl, I
lived in jeans and was quite
a tomboy.

I still tend to be casual in

my style, mixing masculine
tailoring and boyish cuts
with skinny jeans and
juxtaposing that with heels,
the chunkier and higher the
better. Anything overtly
pretty or feminine is a
definite turn off for me.

Alice in Wonderland

It was taped from the

every day.

I love Cabbage!

KEN BOYLAN, Make-up artist

I have a new addition to my family.

He is white, fluffy with black

eyes, floppy white ears and
whenever you spell the word “walk”,
he tilts his head comically from
side to side. You may have guessed

by now that our new addition is a

dog. He’s a Bichon Frise and his
name is Charlie.

He sometimes comes with me when I am

working and inevitably the stylist
or the photographer asks for
Charlie to be in one of the pictures
because, if I may say so myself, he
is a supermodel amongst dogs.

However, at home he is just cute

little Charlie who has an obsession
with my socks.
